Bumping this post because Spelunky is awesome. I didn't get into it when I first installed it; there's a lot of controls, and the learning curve is pretty steep. But once you play with it for a while and learn the controls (make sure to read the readme.txt and to play the tutorial!) it really sucks you in. There's an excellent balance between trying to get to the next level and trying to get the most stuff. Not to mention rescuing maidens and stealing idols, etc.
Plus there's lots of rewarding little things to discover, like what can be picked up and thrown, how to dodge certain traps, and what those creepy sacrificial altars are for!
So far, the farthest I've gotten is level 5.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I never got very far into the first level before I begun playing Half-life and Far Cry 2 instead, but when my "need to play this game"-pile is empty I'm going to give it some serious attention.
According to what I've read there are some 12 or 14 levels in total.

That's pretty awesome...managed to get a top score of 140, which I was pretty pleased with. Those guys getting over 300 must be using aimbots though, surely?
Don't look now, but I think there's something weird attached to the bottom of my posts.

Yeah, that's pretty cool. I was finally able to get a decent score when I realized that the arc of throw was just a parabola, and all I had to do was find the point where the curve continues into the basket. High score so far is 121 and some change.

Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Frigging work webfilter. Tonight when I get home I will be sure to do whatever it is that one does with robot dinosaurs that shoot beams when they roar!

In honor of my completion of a 7th column of episodes over the weekend, and also because I haven't linked to it before:

This is a killer game. Slick graphics, simple controls, great physics, and 500 levels to play. It's also completely unforgiving and totally addicting. Download it NOW.

Haha, I love N! I've been playing it for over a year now, off and on, and have all but maybe 14 or 15 episodes to go. I have all columns 1-5 completed as well as column 9. There are only that handful left in 6, 7, and 8 that still cause me grief. Have you tried any of the user-made levels, yet? Some of those are crazy.

I downloaded the Legacy pack of levels once upon a time, and gave up after like level 5, where I apparently had to pull some crazy move? I had to figure out how to jump really high, and couldn't, so I said "Screw it" and haven't played it since. I do like a lot of the DDA levels, or the KRADDA ones; they just blow my mind. I've made 4 levels of my own that I think are fun, though only one of them would probably be worth uploading.

Fixed that for you.
The DOOM engine games are my favorite games ever. I'm personally a huge fan of the Doomsday source port.
