This is a new low for the Malazan Facebook group, the mod/admin Claudia is flat out defending Elon Musk's Nazi salutes in a post on the group
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Ehhhh that group was rapidly, rapidly going downhill a few years back when I got banned from it. I can't even remember the name of the guy who kicked me (wasn't Jon). I can't say I miss it.

"Defending" as in claiming they weren't intentional, weren't actually Nazi salutes, or that Nazi salutes are fine?

Just Musk's usual reflexive Nazi salute when he gets excited (perhaps it's like an erection?...)?

Specifically defending in the 'look at these single frames of various other politicians with their arm outstretched, clearly this is exactly the same as Musk explicitly doing the salute in a video and no I will not be providing the clips those pictures were cherrypicked from' sense, and more generally when she was claiming white people were the most genocided against minority and had to pretend Stalin wasn't white to fit her argument

A few bigger authors are showing their asses on AI and it’s not making anyone happy and other authors are spouting off in response:

Charles De Lint, David Gerrold, and Raymond Feist are all defending it…using a lot of “it’s here to stay get used to it”, “it’s like a hip hop remix” Boomer like arguments…and it makes me sad.

Jeff Vandermeer has lashed out at them…and frankly, I get it.

And what's even worse is... they're right.

That apparently AI generated or assisted story that got nominated for the Commonwealth prize went on to win it.

Quote

Jamir Nazir's The Serpent in the Grove, which critics allege has 'obvious markers' of AI use, was described as 'original, poetic and deeply moving' by the judging chair

[...] Critics also drew attention to particular lines, including: "Sun on galvanise is a cruel instrument"; "She had the kind of walking that made benches become men"; and "Marsha lived two bends down … [she was] big in the way of women who never apologise to furniture".

Sam Neill died. :(

What an amazing actor he was and apparently a pretty good bloke as well.

He was brilliant. I caught an interview with him maybe last year where he was talking about his farm in NZ and all the animals he kept, and he seemed like a lovely chap who was just living the dream away from the limelight.

(Also, has spent the past twenty years being one of my slightly off-beat celebrity crushes, I shall be taking no questions at this time Posted Image)

Dr Grant was the movie character of my childhood.

I'm glad at least he'd kicked cancer's arse. Might fire up JP again later.

Sir Garfield Sobers died, aged 89.
A great cricketer and more importantly a great man.
The words "Icon" and "Legend" are often overused these days, but not in his case.
He will be missed.

We put both kids in local summer day camps all summer each year, and switch them around the town camps (all run by or through the region) activity camps, cooking camps, science camps ect.

Son was put into this one science camp and after one day he said he hated it, he said one kid called him "The A word" and the other kids were mean and when he told the counsellors that the kids were being mean he said most of the counsellors were also mean or didn't care and it made him super sad most of the day.

My son is like Drax. Hyper literal and if he tells you something happened, it's usually safe to believe him.

So my wife called the town and they approved switching him to an activity camp he already liked last week for the rest of this week, so he doesn't have to go back to the other one.

Then when she dropped him off at the better camp the coordinator (for there whole region) came up to her and asked her if she could provide more info as the camp he didn't like is not run BY the town, but a 3rd party through the town camps system and we are not the first parents to complain about it as it turns out.

Sounds like they won't get into the program next year if this lady has her say...my wife said she was visibly angry about it and said that kids camps should be fun and if the camp directors and coordinators aren't making sure it's a safe happy space then they should not run a camp.

Anyways, so a good ending, but it's really quite upsetting that this kind of thing goes on.

What's funny is both kids LOVE pretty much all the counsellors at the other camps as even though they are all teens, they are super responsible and make sure everyone is having a great time. So I can't imagine how bad the other counsellors are at the bad camp.

Well, he was assaulted/attacked at the other camp. Jeezus.

They said it was a scratch, but whole whole face is badly clawed up, and bruised and his chest, behind his ear, his hand...all injured.

They tried to tell. me it was s all altercation and he got a scratch from it and acted like it was nothing....before I saw him.

So my wife (ever the mama bear) took photos, got the camp directors names emailed them, with the photos and told them that this was not acceptable and that this happened on their watch was disappointing, and asked what they were going to do to keep our son safe from this kid. We will see what they say, but when my wife is incensed you gotta watch out...

I have a feeling the other kids parents were told some banal version of the story where their kid wasn't in the wrong or that it was a light altercation and a scratch, but apparently this kid stole something from my kids bag, my kid asked repeatedly for it back and they would not give it, so he tried to grab it back and the kid started punching and the clawing at my kid....in the end my son said he shoved the kid to get him off him....the counsellors were all not watching at the time.

I told him he did the right thing by not fighting back (camp rules are keep your hands to yourself which my son abided) but that in future if someone is hurting him and you ask for help and the counsellors don't help, then you have my full permission to fight back. My kid is not incapable of defending himself, but we've drilled into him to be rule follower first and that's what he did here.

We both expressed how proud we were of him for doing the right thing even though it resulted in injury and that we were horrified that this happened to him.

We will see what the camp says. I think they should ban the other kid entirely....that behaviour was not just bad it was WELL over the top of acceptable elementary school age tussles between kids. Like three of the scratches are so deep they might scar. Wife is taking son to the doctor as a precautionary measure against infection of the injuries.

I have a few choice words for the supervisor who made Sure to speak to me BEFORE I saw my kid so I didn't know how bad it was.

I hope you get some sort of resolution to this QT - poor lamb, that's really horrible.

Talking to you before you'd seen the injuries also feels like a very cynical and deliberate move.

Thanks TRB,

Yeah it does. My wife is going to point that to the camp directors when she speaks with them this morning, that the supervisor I spoke with really downplayed the injuries. Which is not on.
