We took our son to try out some classes today. We happened to go on Observation Week - when parents are allowed in the classes to watch their kids - and before each class it was made clear that phones weren't allowed.

During the dance class, one of the kids turned around, all smiles, to look at her mum but her mum was using her phone. I watched as the kid slowly lost her smile and started getting teary. She looked over again a little later after being praised for her plié and the mum was still looking at her phone and the girl burst out crying. Even though she spent the rest of the class crying, everytime she looked at her mum the mum was on her phone.

I felt so bad for her.

You should have walked over to her and gently told her "GET OFF YOUR FUCKING PHONE AND PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CHILD!"

@Ando

Thanks. I'm hoping it isn't bad enough to change regional geography. :(

The problem with doing that is I'm making an assumption about *why* she is on the phone.

I remember going to my youngest brother's primary school performance and there was a woman who was constantly on her phone in the row in front of us. Mum kept whispering to me about it and how you could see her son looking disappointed. I leaned forward under the pretence of picking up my water bottle and snooped. From what I saw, it was pretty clear she was texting someone about someone being in hospital. I told my mum and she felt really bad. It turned out that her brother, the boy's uncle, had been in an accident that morning but the mum didn't want her son to miss out on the performance. I know because mum felt so bad about assuming the worse about her that she went up and apologised afterwards. Nevermind it made me look like a real creep for reading over her shoulders. 😂

Cyclone Debbie keeps tracking to hit land further and further south of us.

Which is great news for us, but this is in the groove messing thread because my good fortune is at the expense of those further south.

Yeah, it's looking like it's going to hit near my aunt's place now.
Hopefully it won't last long once it crosses over to land.

Yeah fingers crossed it loses a lot of energy once it hits land.

On the funny side, right now my son is watching Dinosaur Train on ABC. This episode features a hurricane. :(

It always blows my mind how angry stuff like this makes me.
I won't tell anyone how to raise their kid, but a part of me deeply wants an easily concealed EMP / bowel disruptor / facesmack gun every time i see something like this.

From memory, every actor in that movie looked like they'd just stepped up from doing porn. Isn't there a big ol' booby scene when the shark first appears? Or is that another movie? I've watched so many ghost-mecha-dino-topus-nado-versus shark movies that they all kind of bleed into each other.

You're thinking of Boob Shark: The Shark With Boobs.

My problem right now is I'm addicted to bubble gum. I bought a bag of 90 bubble gums less than a week ago and I'm halfway through already. It's not high quality gum or anything. It's Super Bubble, the Halloween staple for households that warred with Dubble Bubble households.

It did at least lead me to a Retrojunk article on gum: http://www.retrojunk...bubble-gum-wars
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I loved bubble gum when I was a kid! I think it was one of my favorite Hallowe'en treats, right after any kind of chocolate. I used to buy Bazooka and / or Hubba Bubba - grape flavor forever! - at my local corner store. I think the Bazooka ones were like 10 cents apiece, but man were those comics dumb.
Alas for me though, once when I was about 11 I was happily chewing away when the gum actually ripped out one of my loose molars. I can't remember what kind of gum it was, but needless to say I was traumatized; my groove took months to recover from that.

Back in post-Soviet Ukraine, it was not uncommon to buy bubble gum and discover that some asshole had substituted it for rubber and resold it. Or the the manufacturer never bothered to use real bubble gum. As a kid, I loved the stuff anyway, which is why bubble gum will forever be associated with disappointment for me. Imagine spending your cherished little pocket money on nothing.

Then again, we also had instantly flammable coockies.

No

I accept that people are generally morally reprehensible, hell I'm far from an angel, but how people can so wilfully deny their entitalism and xenophobia/otherism is beyond me.

But outside of that. My entire make up seems to be slowly changing, generally I was a happy/optimist/cheerful person with (irl outside of mafia breakdowns) a really long fuse and generally laid back. Sober, drunk, tired, awake, whatever. My world views and outlook didn't overly change, unless I had a brutal hangover, but thats understandable.
But this last year or more I have definitely found myself being a lot more short tempered and my, I don't know word, emotional base, mood, whatever. I can just be up and down like a fucking rollercoaster. All of a sudden the world has started to get to me

No idea, I was a good kid and too scared to try them after the following incident: In first or second grade or thereabouts, we had the principal do the rounds through all the classes in the middle of a lesson. Insisted on interrupting, then proceeded to take out a pack of cookies and was like: 'See those? You can buy them at the store around the corner. Don't do that. Bad for your health.' She rattled off why but I forgot, all my first/second grade self registered was how she then held a burning match to one of the cookies and it instantly burner. Looked like it contained some kind of fuel, based on the flame, which my first/second grad self could identify based on my brother previously spending an afternoon demonstrating how to set a rain puddle on fire to fuck with my limited perception of physics. I later found out he'd prepared said rain puddle by pouring so much fuel into the water, that's what the puddle eventually mostly consisted off. Anyway, at least I knew what stuff infused with fuel looked like when burning. Fun times. I miss them, despite the potentially hazardous crap Masquerading for food in the stores, sometimes.
