The boy has had congestion and a nasty fever since Friday night. Had a look at his throat last night and saw swollen tonsils with big yellow streaks on them. :(

Doctor confirmed tonsillitis today and gave us penicillin which will take 24 hours or so to cut in. Told us to keep up with the kiddy nurofen/paracetemol we've been using to counteract the fever.

Poor little guy has actually been quite good with it, barely complaining, just very tired and sick.

In the meantime, I've doubled my daily dose of garlic/horseradish/C tablets. But I expect whatever virus and/or bacteria that triggered his tonsilltis to hit the rest of us at some point. At least the Mrs and I don't have tonsils thanks to getting them removed in the 70s. For the life of me I have no idea why they don't do it these days. I know so many of the younger ones at work who can have bouts up to 4 times a year because they still have the stupid things. Yes I know they're part of the lymphatic system but since I was apparently a sickly child before I had mine out (they were actually poisoning me after a bout of flu) and then afterwards I was a lot better and still have a pretty good immune system, wouldn't that suggest they've mostly obsolete?

Looking for a birthday gift for my GF and every idea I came up with, I discarded pretty quickly.
Now there's only slightly more than a week left and all options I have are gadgets she doesn't need, trinkets she might not like (and that I don't like 100% myself), or events we didn't like enough to get tickets for.
An issue is that she's really good at finding awesome presents for me.

How about a surprisingly stylish homemade dinner? Good wine, tablecloth, candles, flowers. The whole thing? Worked very well for me in the past. Though considering how it worked out I may not be the best person to take advise from :(

Most people call them "hands" Maccy.

And stop using them like that, you'll do yourself a mischief.

This is something I've done on those occasions where there is nothing to get.

Get a bunch of little things, food, trinkets, and all that sundry stuff, go get an empty basket and some wrapping, and do up a basket full of goodies for her...and then make her a nice dinner. Easy peasy.

Kind of what I did for our fifth anniversary - a book, a packet of gourmet tea, a rather delicate perfume all together

It's my goto when there is nothing else to get her, no need for a big item, just get multiple little items.

Had a super-fun long weekend.

Came back home 1 AM last night, epic fail with hitting "cancel instead of "snooze" this morning.

My shoulders and arms are in exquisite torment, due to being strained from tubing, and then thoroughly sunburned.

And I gotta plunge into work head-first, because next 3 weeks are phenomenally busy.

On the bright side, at least I'm not hung over.

It is a good suggestion: we both love food. However, her last birthday gift to me was a dinner at Amass in Copenhagen, so I'd feel a little like I'm winging it. Plus, apart from the stylish aspects (candles and flowers), I do some classical french cooking at the very least twice a month for us. That's also why most present-worthy kitchen gear, like a Santoku knife (despite the fact that she would love one) would in practice turn out to be more of a gift to myself than to her (also because I probably wouldn't be able to resist to call it Dragnipur).

I guess those people pulling the Gate need dinner, too.

Just give her a shit gift. It's a sign your relationship has gone to the next level when you stop making an effort for birthday presents. Embrace it.
