one of my fillings has stacked it. Dentist can't fit me in until Monday on account of everything being icy as balls around here.

It hurts, like a LOT

I'm in the emergency room with The Girlfriend. Might be a kidney stone.

This is a new enough relationship (4 months) that I met her parents for the first time in the ER waiting room. They were nice and worried. We sent the parents home to rest and I'll text them if things change or whatever.

Hospitals are full from illness (flu & COVID). There are no beds and the staff are doing their best. We're both masked and doing what we can to avoid adding onto the tough stuff.

I hope everyone here gets better and can get those appointments + good news.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Here's hoping she gets sorted and better quickly and no further illnesses arise!

Hope you end up with a good relationship with her family as a result too haha

Found out what happened with the filling. It had failed and dug down onto the root. Had it out and another put in but if this one fucks it the tooth has to go.

Genetic clinic denied my referral, which is super frustrating because the primary care doctor who made the referral didn’t ask me shit to include in the referral. If I had known I had to convince someone to even see me I would have gone into more detail about everything, but I figured that would be best saved for the specialist, who now refuses to see me for not meeting the criteria.

Man, that's fucked. :(
How can a doctor refuse to see a referred patient?
If the primary care doctor thought there was enough to refer you, shouldn't the specialist therefore at least do you the courtesy of a 15 minute consult and find out themselves?
Especially if the form wasn't filled out correctly. It's no skin off their nose. Can you call and say there was extra stuff that wasn't on the initial form?
Wow, the American medical system truly is fucked. Add that to pretty much every other system under American capitalism, and I don't know how anyone lives there if they're not ridiculously wealthy.

China Weighs Sale of TikTok US to Musk as a Possible Option

[...] as part of an expansive discussion on how to work with Donald Trump's administration [...] A potential high-profile deal with one of Trump's closest allies holds some appeal for the Chinese government, which is expected to have some say over whether TikTok is ultimately sold[...]

Musk's X — the former Twitter — would take control of TikTok US and run the businesses together[...] With more than 170 million users in the US, TikTok could bolster X's efforts to attract advertisers. Musk also founded a separate artificial intelligence company, xAI, that could benefit from the huge amounts of data generated from TikTok.

Right, instead of Chinese propaganda or potential crypto-censorship (via controlling the recommendation / feed algorithms), we'll get the Musk/Trump administration's propaganda and censorship... just in time for the dawn of autoTrumpocracy (and then possibly Robo-Trumpocracy...).

Got a smart doorbell for the new house and cannot for the life of me find the breaker that kills the power to it. I know that doorbells are usually wired to a small transformer which I think I have located, but none of the breakers have shut it off. We had an electrician come and do some work on lights in our place and he said that a doorbell is not a high voltage and even still hooked up I would not get much of a shock if I touched both wires...but I have no interest in finding out...it's driving me batty as I'd really like to install this not just for safety reasons, but also because the old doorbell is super wonky and half the time it makes a low drone after it's rung and I have to toggle the button to get it to stop, so I'm sure the connection in the chime box is probably fucked anyways...

Sigh. Home ownership comes with a bunch of extra shit.

There is a bit more ethics tied up in genetic testing than other kinds of medical tests. A self-respecting genetic clinician would not go testing for stuff willy nilly because there can be negative connotations for the patient and the families, children in particular. It might be down to that giving them a high threshold for accepting referrals.

Is there a specific time when you said cheese on toast was for supper? Or did you always know it was coming all along?

They said I didn’t meet the criteria to be seen, which is super frustrating because I didn’t even give all the information to the guy who wrote the referral. I didn’t think I needed to, I figured I only had to convince him to write the referral and then get into details at the actual diagnostic appointment. Nope. So I’m going another route and trying to find a different primary care doctor who can diagnose me because it’s not even an actual genetic test needed, the condition is genetic but the diagnosis is done through observation.

In the interest of not being all vague and mysterious, the condition I’m trying to get diagnosed is called ehlers-danlos. It’s a hyper mobility disorder that affects the joints and skin and sometimes vascular issues. My sister has it pretty badly, pretty sure I have a more mild version, and I think it’s connected to my neck and headache problems. It can cause spinal instability. Sometimes the vertebrae in my neck feel like they are dislocating, and my ankles and knees and hips and shoulders and elbows are all garbage.

So despite us being worried about chicken pox prior to Christmas, it wasn't that and we had a great time. Then my son (6) got it shortly after. Which he dealt with so well and he went back to school on Monday, having missed the first week of term. We thought the twins (3 & 3) would get it too but nope they seemed unaffected. My wife was looking forward to some return to normalcy on Monday.

Nope both twins got chicken pox on Monday evening 🙄

They're doing ok but one of them especially seems to be not well with it. I'm sure they'll be fine of course but it's just dragging out the sick season further. At least it'll be done in a week or two.
