I got sick last Friday with some kind of cold. Felt sickly throughout the week and just as I thought I was getting better it appears as if I am coming down with another malady, apparently sinusitis this time.

I can't sleep, read, watch movies, or do anything productive.

It appears as If I'm stuck with dismembering demons on Doom.

I get sick like that everytime there's a new Bioware game out.

Since the weather is shockingly nice, I took my bike to run errands today.

I haven't had a chance to ride it since I came back from vacation in Sept, so when it was hard going I figured I was just out of practice (since I always ride on highest gear to give myself extra training)

It took me about an hour to realize smth was genuinely wrong. Turns out my rear wheel was half-deflated.

Cause of that, I now have a bunch of stuff I still have to deal with tomorrow.

I got an email that you tagged me in a photo, but by the time I visited FB it was gone...no notification, no image, nothing.

Wrong thread. They make me happy. Atleast till one of them rams my face. It's gonna happen one night.

Wondering for how many more years I can ignore the neighbourhood kids trick or treating before I become a hypocrite and have to take my own out....

Also running out of enthusiasm for my antenatal group "friends". I can't ditch them or I won't have any grownups to speak to during office hours until I go back to work in April but I need non-baby conversation. My best topics keep failing. I'm not entertaining the possibility that I'm dull, it's all them!

Maybe it's the weather, or maybe it's the fact I'm turning 30 on Friday, but I'm down as fuck lately. Don't really want to celebrate my birthday, since we went to Barcelona for a week to celebrate in August. I just want to go see Dr. Strange, have a drink, eat some cake, but now it's turned into a whole thing, at the behest of my best friend who always celebrates birthdays like it's going out of style.

But this "thing" has just made me realize that I don't have that many friends. I don't have a big group o friends from school or work or anything, I was never really good at befriending several people at once. I found one person I liked and that was that. Or I made friends with the friends of my boyfriend, or just inserted myself into my other friend's circle of friends like some sort of parasite. But now I'm single, have lost half my "friendstock" (because they weren't really MY friends to begin with), and I'm left with a string of random people who live too far away for me to invite them to my birthday.

I feel lonely, and I feel like a failure at life.

But then again, it might just be the weather.

I'd say its a combination of the weather and turning 30.

for some reason society has decided (in my experience in the west anyway) that 30 is some kind of monumental landmark, when you should have shit figured out and be well on your way into a happy ever after.

I hit 30 last summer, and my 30th year was a bit of a mess for me on all fronts. Because I looked around and saw a lot of my contemporaries seemed to have shit figured out and I didn't remotely.

I've realised it all nonsense, I know people that were happy and settled down by the time they were very early 20s, and on of our neighbours who has basically been a godfather/ uncle to me all my life didn't even look like settling until he was over 40, now happily married with a kid. there's definitely one couple I know where I am, and basically everyone else is, convinced that he only even starting looking for a girlfriedn because 30 was approaching and he panicked. He is not a happily married man.

So don't fret the 30, its just a fucking number. everyone lives their lives at their own speed, look at me, I'm pissing off again and dropping my current career in January. well that's the plan barring a lottery win.
I'd say you have more friends than you think/ realise, and if you lost those people from your friendstock completely, were they worth having in the first place? I'd think not personally.
I'm a big fan of a party so I can see where your friend is coming from, but on the other hand, its your birthday, do whatever you want, she'll toe the line.

Hey, don't sweat the friend thing. Not everyone has a huge circle of friends, or even a medium one. I made a few friends in college. We were incredibly close. They didn't stick around afterwards. I have around 2 friends from school who I am close with. That's it basically. I have gone through phases where I didn't have a single person to call to when I was down. But like everything else in life, those times passed.

I am younger than you, so I won't tell you anything about being 30. But I will say this - it is infinitely better to have 1-2 close people who will be with you when you need them than 10 people who won't. This is what I realized when I got serious with my SO. Treasure those people. Have a great birthday.

What maccy said. There's no obligation to have life figured out by 30. I'm 29, and I fervently believe that- I have at most the career thing kind of down, but everything else (relationships/real estate/etc) I don't feel i'm even close to starting to figure out how to resolve. And that's fine, I don't feel any obligation to do that.

Re: friends: it also depends on the person. I have a lot of people I hang out with due to various involvements (soccer, or Uki community stuff, mostly). I can loosely define 3 "groups" of at least 15-20 people I speak to/hang out with on a regular basis, for diff occasions. By conventional means, i'm a fairly "social" person. But these are mostly "acquaintances", not "friends".

And if I really need to talk or vent, i'm most likely to facebook my cousin back home on a diff continent and ask her to get on Skype, :)

And if your weather's anything like ours, it's a huge factor, too.

Fucking teenagers and their slow sullen walk across streets holding up traffic is pissing me off today. Why do people do this, its not just rude, its really dangerous. There are more and more drivers out there and more and more reasons for distracted driving and yet some idiots think it is a good idea to slowly make their way across a street ( not even in the crosswalk) and assume that everyone should slow to a halt to accommodate them. I see young kids look both ways and then quickly cross a street but when kids reach a certain age they assume the whole world revolves around them. It infuriates me to the point of almost wanting them to get hit by a car just to wipe that angsty look off their faces. I do not text and drive, I rarely talk on the phone while driving, I don't have kids to distract me and I'm not much of a speeder and I am well aware that pedestrians have the right of way, but for fucks sake move your asses. If you are stupid enough to trust that every driver is just waiting to stop their car so you can take your sweet time then maybe we don't need you among the living anymore. I know who is going to win when it is me versus a car at any speed so I always cross streets quickly or just flag the car along and then cross. In all honesty I don't want to see anyone get hurt while crossing the street but to me it seems incredibly reckless to risk your life by assuming some stranger is not only going to see you but also stop on time for you. When I was 13 I was on a bike ride with two friends and we got to a crosswalk and the car stopped so we rode our bikes across the street. We were in a line and I was the last in line and as soon as I got in front of the car he started up and hit me. Besides a sore arm I was unhurt and even though the cops came I didn't press charges or go to the hospital. I had followed all the rules, we waited for the car to stop and we were in a crosswalk quickly crossing the street and the driver still was not paying enough attention to see me coming right after my two friends so I know how easy it is to get hit by a car even when you are doing everything right. I may be sensitive to this issue but a slow walk into traffic is asking for trouble so why risk it.

It's not just angsty teens dawdling and paying scant attention while crossing the street though. I see people of all ages doing this every single day. Not even looking when stepping into the street from between parked cars, like they're immune to being run down.

I was hit by cars on two occasions when i was a kid, so I damn well learned my lesson.

I echo the sentiments Grimmy. I have never had a big group of friends, I prefer my small group of really good friends, there is nothing wrong with it at all!

Also, the whole age thing, the way I look at it is that I like myself better now than 10 years ago, I earn more money and am more comfortable in my own skin... who cares if there are a few wrinkles in the mix too!

I have one friend from school (we've known each other now exactly half of our lives, which is terrifying) and a handful of other really close people - that's it. Everyone else is varying levels of acquaintance. I'm 27 - I'm told this selectiveness/shrinking of friendship groups comes with age - don't fret about it :)
