Lawyer bill came. Just got royally fucked up the ass despite numerous requests for cost transparency and trying to keep the costs to a minimum. I will not be using this lawyer again.

And then, my stupid fucking ex, because she didn't actually hire a lawyer despite consulting with one and claiming it was her lawyer, now just forced us to go to court for the judge who wants to make sure SHE isn't getting coerced or fucked over. And my lawyer is coming, required by the court, and thus guess who will foot the bill. Not my ex, the bitch.

I am confused. DOn't you get billed for any consultation with a lawyer whether you hire him or not?

Some lawyers do a free consultation (one hour or half hour). They usually do this as a lead in to get clients.

Of course, cheapskates take advantage of this, but lawyers have ways of not providing all that much concrete help in the free portion of the meet.

There are also lawyers who do pro bono work (for free) or law students in topic-specific clinics supervised by attorneys.

Anyways, the lawyer bill here should be seen as an investment to not be totally screwed later. It's going to hurt and not be pleasant, but it'll pay off later as finality settles in.

Plus lawyers are notoriously lax about due dates. Just pay it whenever.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I did hire the lawyer. Main problem was I was up front in asking for how I was doing in spending with them, etc, and then I get a bill with every micro interaction charged. They never gave me any indication I was spending a lot, and when I asked of I was getting charged, I was told it would be waived for that instance, which was nice, but then I had to guess what would be charged for and ask about it. Not transparent...

But that is how lawyers work apparently. And silly me for not being on my guard the whole time.

True. I would feel better though if I didn't have to hire another one in a year to negotiate the next year's alimony and then another lawyer hire a year after that. Why are you charged the most money when you have none?

The bill was a good $1000 more than I expected, which wasn't unreasonable with me doing pretty much all of the paperwork myself, doing all the scheduling and prompting, all of the arranging of things, etc. I tried so hard to be frugal, and in the end I end up with thousands in attorney debt and my ex skates free. I just want to have one week free of drama financial or otherwise. I am so exhausted and beaten down

If you have the alimony set this year at whatever rate with the help of the lawyer/court, next year is going to be much easier - perhaps even not requiring a lawyer. The hard part is this part now. Not so much later unless things change in a big way for one or both of the parents (or the children).

The next time you see your lawyer, ask for an explanation to you of how future alimony adjustments are made. It shouldn't take long (as in a few minutes).

Again, I'm not your lawyer. But you are kinda doom and glooming over stuff that hasn't happened yet (and may not) in some part here.

It is easiest when both parties can work this out between themselves and without lawyers or courts. But you've mentioned that your ex is kinda nuts about this. Do the best you can. It will be over eventually.

Thanks man. It has just been a long week so it's hard not to see worse in the future. I would just like a week or two sans drama or shocking revelation
