I was absolutely starving at midday but had to wait until now to have my lunchbreak. Then my lunch took forever to heat up in the microwave and now I have burnt my mouth on 10 consecutive mouthfuls. I WILL NOT WAIT FOR IT TO COOL!!

Why not gradate it so that people working more actually still get the difference, rather than, as you say, discouraging people from working because they're suddenly a couple hundred dollars worse off for an extra dollar of real, hard-earned money? Is the stuff you earn yourself somehow worth more at the store? No? So why the fuck would the system assume that once you're earning a certain amount still less than what you're getting then you're fine? O.o

Yeah, it's fucked up mate. My girlfriend and her son cost $270 per month to insure, yet they still have to meet a $3000 deductible for the insurance company to pay anything. Meeting the deductible is basically impossible unless someone is hospitalized or has a major procedure. Given that we have a 5 year old kid, we're at the doctor's every month or two, which means she's paying anywhere between $270 and $400 a month for health insurance since the deductible is never going to get met.


We've come to the decision that it simply isn't worth paying for. It would be more beneficial to just put $300 into a bank account every month for emergency situations. The only person who really needs insurance is the kid, and there's a great program in our state called Hawk-I. For $20 a month he'll get health insurance that is better than anything we could get elsewhere. Deductible free and all of the regulars (shots, prescription drugs, doctor visits, etc.) are all paid by the insurance company. It's only offered for families under a certain income, but we make nowhere near the limit.

It's hard to wrap my head around. We have to make some changes, such as no more depo shot (which Medicaid covers in Iowa, which I thought was smart - it's cheaper for the government to pay for prevention than to pay for another kid), but that's fine with me. $250 to get a shot every three months is ridiculous, especially when it makes you gain weight and throws your hormones out of whack. $1000 of birth control shots or $50 of condoms? Sure rubber isn't all that great but I'll take it over the alternative any day, especially when it's fucking with her hormones.

Meh, rambled a bit much there, but health insurance has been pissing me off lately.

As someone who tried to play the odds with no health insurance, it's a really bad idea if something does go wrong.

I'm looking at 27k and counting for a week long stay in the hospital over pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in my lung that nearly killed me) and I was a very athletic and fit person with no hospitalizations in the last ten year.

As a parent in a family that's not making a ton of money - particularly with a young kid - I think paying for the health insurance is a good idea. Especially if something uncontrollable like a bad car accident happens.

I really hope it doesn't happen to your family, but I was burned by that logic.

Also look into an IUD device.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Yeah, if we were making a bit more money that would work, but we're at the point where health insurance is breaking the bank. If we never had any doctor bills it would be okay, but we have $150 or so of those to pay every month as well. We have to prioritize what we're spending our money on, and right now rent and groceries are at the top.

I'm probably not telling you anything you don't know, and the intricacies of your states system could call bullshite on this point, but you can shop around for insurance on a fairly cutthroat basis, including telling one company outright what you were quoted by another, telling them what you want/can afford and letting them make you an offer, and trading commitment vs payment along the lines of 'i'll sign for three years at X rate' or 'if i make no claim for the first year i want a reduced deductable of X'. My point being these companies want your business and shopping for insurance, any kind of insurance, is a lot like shopping for a car - the informed buyer who is ready to negotiate has more options, including options that are published absolutely nowhere until you ask.

As far as birth control goes man, I would highly suggest the Depo shot, despite the cost. My wife got it for free while I was in the military, but she never had any adverse side effects as far as weight gain or any physical things like that go. Hormones and shit are another story, but out of all the research she did regarding birth control, that one had one of the better reviews as far as safety and stuff went. Obviously you're strapped for cash though, and I understand that, just my 2 cents on the situation. I hope things start to lighten up, shit sounds tough.

Edit: Or if you don't like your current job, go to Starbucks. Awesome benefits. They cover your family too. Great place to work :p

BB does, but i'm going from a not-BB (Nokia C300... barely a smartphone) to a Q10, since once I manage to find proper employment, it'll be basically a necessity.

the new major issue is the fact that Crackberry's desktop manager insists on handling music files through either Windows Media player (which I loathe with a passion) or Itunes (Which is a bloated piece apple software that I've never dealt eith before and I refuse to start now). Meaning i'll now have to actually deal with stupid Media Player...
