So, an hour and twenty minutes late for work - good start to the day!

And now I've torn a hole in my jeans at the knee. Not by doing anything awesome and athletic, or even by spectacularly stacking it - nope, this happened when I squatted down to retrieve some stationery from a low shelf. To be fair, this particular pair of jeans has served me well for nearly two and a half years, so it's probably time for them to go. Nonetheless, I am now inadvertently rocking an 80's look that I particularly despise.

The angry post-it face I have stuck on the back of my chair to warn people off is a good representation of my face right now.

Does the angy face post-it technique work? I could use that one around here, except I would need either 5000 post-its or just paint the Devil's face on my door.

Tip from a London commuter: Yell "Can you all move down please" and then take a run up Most mornings I get on the tube at King's Cross, there's a swift decision that has to be taken as to which of my fellow commuters I feel more comfortable rubbing my backside against and who gets the front!

Indeed, in Toronto this happens with the subway ALL THE TIME. It drives me right mental. It bothers me because people who are going to be on for long while yet will stand right at the doors so they can get off first when they get to their stop...instead of moving to the center of the car to allow for people to get on. NO one is courteous and I learned LONG ago that to ride the public transit you kind of have to be a dick to people sometimes. I once boarded a bus after work at my old job (which was in an industrial area) and there was this swathe of middle-aged women sitting at the front and a crowd of their friends all milling about standing at the front (because that's where their seated friends were) and blocking the way....meanwhile the ENTIRE back of the bus was nearly empty (there were even seats available back there FFS!) So I politely asked aloud "Could you folks move back, there's lots of space"....nothing...no movement...no acknowledgement, just dead stares. I waited a moment and said it again louder "Could you guys please move back, there's lots of space and some of us are in the doorwell"...nothing...again...so the bus driver hits his little electronically voiced button that says over the speaker "For customer convenience, please move back"...nada. I looked at the bus driver and her rolled his eyes and I said to him "They're simply not listening, it's like we don't exist." he laughed and said "Have at them, if you want.". So I shouted. "Hey! move the FUCK back. It is not safe to drive like this and quite frankly I don't think your conversations with your friends is THAT important!"....n-o-t-h-i-n-g...I have never been so close to punching random strangers (be they middle-aged women or not) in my LIFE! As it stood I had to stand in the doorwell for the entire trip (and was basically blocking the driver's view of his mirrors on that side)...and you want to know what happened when we got to the station...wait for this...this is the icing on the cake...two or three of these ladies ACTUALLY attempted to push past me to get off first...SERIOUSLY. So after having had QUITE enough I shoved all three of them back into their friends and said "Oh hell no you fucking cows!" turned and walked off the bus.

That is as mad as I've ever been driven by the transit discourtesy.

This same station is notorious for this kind of stuff...and I was actually body-checked once (again by a big older woman) out of the way so she could get on the bus first.

I honestly don't know what some people are taught by their parents.

Yep, this is true. I've been in rush hour transit in London UK, Washington D.C., Calgary, and Baltimore...and not ONE of the was even remotely as bad as the TTC is in Toronto. It's no wonder the city of full of such rageful Canadians. I'm going to be happy when they finally let a private company run things. On the London underground at rush hour it is unofficially accepted that if you get in somebody's way, you are fair game for a shove or barge. I have a friend who is rather petite and she had to give up commuting and work from home when she was 5 months pregnant because she got shoved so much. I've been on the tube where the only thing holding me upright (apart from all the people around me) is my face against the carriage. I get barged out of the way by someone at least once a day, usually by a middle aged man surrounded by an aura of self-importance. First you learn to accept it, then you're slightly appalled when you realise you are doing it to other people, then you start enjoying reaping carnage yourself

LOL! Nice. I dunno, personally I think that's better than "milling people blocking the way and us polite Canadians not saying anything about it". I'd rather barge people out of the way, quite frankly. We USED to have sticker signs on the escalators "Stand Right, Walk Left" so that lollygaggers who "rode" the escalator would be out of the way of those who (like me) wanted to use the escalator as an assist to get up the stairs and walk up even while it was moving. They took them down after a while because people were idiots and didn't pay attention to signage and were getting shoved. I felt like saying, "It says to STAND RIGHT if you are standing... RIGHT THERE beside your friggin hand, you asshat! READ!" Ugh.

My other fave thing about the UK transit system...the pay as far as you go thing and the turnstiles where you have to swipe your ticket to get OUT of the station....you have NO idea the amount of turnstile jumpers (and with our antiquated 1950's style turnstiles, people who simply twist them halfway and squeeze through) we have here. As a person who pays $130/month for a metropass it enrages me to no end to watch thugs and punk kids riding for free. I actually mouthed off to a young thug girl I saw do the twist thing (in full view of the station attendant) to get in for free and she actually had the stones to turn look at the attendant and back to me and say "What's he gonna do, go fuck yourself mister." and walk away.

SOMETHING has to give here. The transit in this city is in the stone ages.


Oh and as a last thing. If you have one of those suitcases with the scoot-open pull bar and you bring it on the escalator closed, but stop RIGHT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ESCALATOR to put it down and pull it open, you are free game to be punched in the back of your stupid ass skull. It is NOT that hard to trudge a few feet further and out of the way carrying the case and THEN extend the bar. It's called courtesy.

People don't read. So signs are pointless wastes of money.
We've tried using them at work. People either don't see them or ignore them outright. I've performed tests with clients to see if signs had any impact. The result was: none.
Now I just don't bother. If asked why there isn't a sign I simply answer that no one would read it anyway. I only put up the legally demanded ones. Otherwise, meh, too much trouble.

Ah, interesting. I had always assumed no one read them.

I've always thought a good way to streamline people getting on buses and subways would be to construct single person width railings (the type you see for Roller coasters at amusement parks), first come, first serve, first on the bus/subway, ect. No shoving, and everything moves forward tickety boo. You would likely not be astonished by the amount of time that is wasted by people "jamming" in clumps to get on. It's SO ridiculous. We actually have signs (that no one reads I'm sure) at the major subways station of Bloor, because there is one set of stairs and one escalator that comes up from the crossing subway line below it...but it only comes at one end of the platform...so EVERYONE come sup those stairs and their instinct is to rush to get on the first 3 cars that are at that end of the station...the signs tell them to "move down the platform" and "use all available doors" (a notion that is repeated on a loudspeaker every 5 minutes or so)...but no one does it because they are all in such a hurry.

I need to develop some sort of teleporter.

Oh man, this reminds me of a crazy incident I had on the way home a couple of weeks back. A guy in the escalator was on crutches and had 2 small kids each with one of these cases that was too large for them. I'm right behind them (the walk on the left thing having been abandoned due to this poor dude and his hurrendous travelling conditions) and we get to the bottom of the escalator and the kids stop dead to faff with the cases, he rolls into the back of them on his crutches and starts staggering and I start trying to walk backwards to avoid pushing them all over with a huge mass of angry people behind me. Complete pile up!! It was hilarious!

Stand on the right works here because people do just get mowed down on the left. You guys need to adopt the pompous British air of self-importance! People who stand on the left earn the sternest of tuts and a shove

I had something like that happen at the bottom of an airport escalator. Two women stopped at the bottom of a crowded escalator to open their handles, and being right behind them, I had the choice of running into them or trying to hop over the railing.

Considering I was carrying ~90lbs of giant backpack, leaping was out of the question. So I picked the uglier of the two and THIS-IS-SPARTA'd her in the small of the back, walked off, and got in a taxi.

1. I have to share an office phone with 2 other people at work, it's annoying
2. Stuck at my desk with deadlines looming, I'm totally stressed out
3. Both of the colleagues I share a phone with are away from their desks most of the time so when I'm writing, I have to be their frickin PA
4. One of the colleagues has a nanny who is sick today
5. Said nanny is suffering from fits which leave her incoherent
6. Said nanny also barely speaks any English
7. I'm having to answer the phone to a gibbering foreign lady every 15mins on top of the usual office calls
8. I really want to ignore incoherent gibbering nanny but I suppose I'd feel bad if something bad happened to colleagues child (despite the fact colleague is also an annoying gibberer)
9. To top it off, I'm wasting my pretty coloured Post Its taking messages for the 2 of them
10. I don't know why I'm making lists! I'm losing the plot today!
