Do you know how hard it is to sex certain animals?
Yes, that sounds dirty, but I'm talking about identifying the sexual characteristics of animals like baby chickens, certain reptiles and fishes. It is so hard that the training for it can't actually be explained. You just stand there and observe while someone more experienced than you makes the call and eventually you pick up enough details, hunches and old wives' tales to be able to do it yourself.
This post was brought to you by perhaps the most random Wikipedia page I have ever landed on in my life: Chicken Sexing.
Given that the vet claims to be an expert on turtle husbandry etc and the fact that the new vet explained how you tell the difference and now that I know I'm pretty sure I could tell my 12 year old sister how to tell the difference and she could take one look at Tarquin and tell she is a girl. So while it is hard to tell the sex of some reptiles, Australian short-necked turtles rank amongst the easiest of reptiles to sex (tell the sex of, you dirty people!).
If I'm paying someone $160 for the consultation alone I expect them to be able to tell me, correctly, if my turtle is male or female.
