Picked up a copy last weekend in Chicago and while I find the cover artwork somewhat garish I am thoroughly enjoying it - probably because Daniel Waterhouse is a key player and it is back in London

Neil - I have the UK published TPBs of the first two so this stands out somewhat - but as I was not going to be in UK for publishing of this - I did not want to wait for it to arrive

Anyone ever read Thomas Pynchon? Stephenson is compared to him all the time so I decided to check into it but when I saw Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow in my local Waterstones I was a bit daunted by it's size, tiny lettertype and somewhat hazy description on the back cover. Any thoughts on Pynchon?

Phew - what a monster series - he is a master - I am so glad that I took the time. I enjoyed the ending of the book - and nice interesting link back to Cryptonomicon

No kidding. I was afraid to fall asleep while reading Quicksilver, for fear it would fall on me in my sleep! Posted Image Posted Image
You’ve never heard of the Silanda? … It’s the ship that made the Warren of Telas run in less than 12 parsecs.

Just wanted to know if I have to read the others in the Baroque series as Ive had The System of the World, land (or perhaps better described as nearly crashing through my floor) on my doorstep this morning. Which ones are in the Baroque series? Just that if I have to buy them I would rather just pick up the ones pertaining to this rather than getting sidetracked Posted Image

Snow Crash was enjoyable but hardly excellent. I am however impressed in the way that he an actually come up with the plot of the book. It was crazy wild and yet based on truth. Not the best book I ever read but as I said enjoyable.

Our shipment showed up last week, but despite that I'm still only 150 pages in. Very good so far.

Finished Confusion last night and have to say that it is superb - and now we have to wait to find out the outcome for Elisa and Jack - it is a very good read I cannot recommend the series highly enough.

I'm not sure why Cryptonomicon is filed in the sci-fi category, it's mostly just fiction, not a lot of sci (at least not in the classic sci-fi sense). Global Crossing and layman's cryptography is not so futuristic.

That being said, I would highly highly recommend it, but it's a different sort of read. Stephenson tries really hard to come off uber-smart, like Thomas Pynchon or David Foster Wallace, with some success. Stephenson has a great sense of humor, his characters are just wonderful, and there's a lot going on, both in the plot and the metajunk (moral, theme, character, message, etc).

I read Snow Crash after, and was disappointed. It had it's moments, but I thought Cryptonomicon was a much more mature, epic and yet subtle masterwork.

Finished up a few days ago. I really enjoyed it, and will buy the next one when it comes out. I only hope I can remember everything that happened.

As for sales, this week it's #6 on NYT list, and today is #38 on amazon. Better than I thought.

Currently re-reading the Diamond Age.

Very Cooll Ideas, but the book is somewhat challenging. There seems to be almost a divergent story line (Hackworth and his daughter) that I can remember getting frustrated over the first time I read it.
I really like the scope and characterisation used, but other elements of the style leave me cold for some reason... Oh well, still really enjoying the read - will move on to Crypto soon (again)

«I don`t know why Crypto would be put in Sci-Fi. It`s not»

It is. Just consider the character of Enoch Root.

1. Enoch Root looks for about 35 years during WWII

2. Enoch Root is still fit and in the full health sixty years later - incredibly fit for a man close to one hundred.

3. We hear that Enoch Root has been killed but he is still very much alive later on.

4. Enoch Root alawys has with him a mysterious box.

5. When asked if he knows Latin, he answers that he speaks Latin like seventeenth century alchemist.

6. Enoch Root seems to know a lot about secret societies, mysterious plots etc.

Conclusion: Enoch Root is the seventeenth century alchemist who knows tje mystery of philosopher's stone.
