Stephenson's Quicksilver just picked up the Arhur C Clarke Award. Not bad

The Confusion is being released in Canada tomorrow, though I probably won't buy a copy until I finish MT

I'm currently a few oages short of The Confusion's halfway mark, but it's Fantastick and Great. Certainly much more action-packed as Quicksilver first few hundred pages, but without losing the clever parts...

For those who've read The Confusion, how is it, what did you like, dislike, and how does it compare to Quicksilver?

Quicksilver and The Confusion (on p. 352 now) now have so many different themes (fight scenes, intrigue, politics, science, religion, cryptology, sex, commerce) that are interesting. Some people like some things more than others, myself included. But I enjoy a multi-themed story. I love the page headings, makes it easy to check a part of it.

I picked up on Dappa almost right away, I went back to Quicksilver, to check and remembered he's captain of the Minerva, which was built on the Malabar coast.

Agree with you about the structure. I prefer the Eliza scenes in Versailles etc - but it is an all round good book - great series!

I didn't think the cover was much worse than the other two, but that's not saying much. Posted Image

I finished System and overall I'm pleased with the series. It was definitely worth plowing through the first book for.

282 pages in on The Confusion. I'm liking it a lot. The 2 books (parts) interlock well.

Just finished Zodiac. What a book, the SnowCrash ethos applied to environmental radicals. Hypercool and really makes you think. Now I've gone and bught all other Stephenson stuff I haven't read (i.e., Interface & The Big U). As for the conclusion of the Baroque Cycle, I'm sure NS saved the best for last. Enoch Root is just the uber-character and him fighting would indeed be awesome. Preferably with Samurai swords Posted Image (which seems to be NS weapon of choice, also).

He did it again! Stephenson really is an amazing writer. Loved all his stuff and he certainly doesn't disappoint with The Confusion. Baroque Cycle is shaping-up to be an all-time great classic must-have series. I really can't understand why the Cycle is classified as SF/F for it is very good historical fiction through and through. Deserves to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Eco, Pressfield, et al.
My only criticism of The Confusion is that it is a bit too episodic. To many shifts in time and place... but that doesn't matter much really.

Finished The Confusion and its very good. Since all the characters were introduced in Quicksilver the plot moves significantly faster. Some genuine laugh out loud moments too. And slightly shorter ( only 815 pages Posted Image)

I'm getting a copy from chapters. It's 30% off coz it's a glob and mail bestseller. I get another 10 % for having a membership card. I got Quicksilver for the same price.

He is a bright guy and most erudite.

UK TPB have now arrived in SA - but as I am half way through certainly glad I already have it - and I save over $10 buying in the US. The cover is certainly better though

I also have a copy of "The Confusion." Will tackle that badboy when I get to it. (It currently sits 3rd in line.)
You’ve never heard of the Silanda? … It’s the ship that made the Warren of Telas run in less than 12 parsecs.

Lucky sod Posted Image

Don't dream of attempting to read The System of the World without reading the other two Baroque Cycle novels first. Quicksilver comes first, then The Confusion. Bad news is that they are both as big as TSotW.
Quicksilver is 916 pages in trade paperback and The Confusion is a mere 815 pages.

I thought it was better than Quicksilver. Really looking forward to book 3.

Confusion is a great read. Fight scenes in Cairo and against the Marathas were cool. Queena-Kuta and Qwghlm wooooo! I'm looking foreward to the rest of what happens to Eliza, Jack etc. I hope Enoch fights in the third book that'd be awesome.

You have to really be into the series though, its not the lightest of reads, so mcuh going on, history, science, religion, war, techonology, accultism, etc... A mix of many genre, but in a very classical way. I love the Baraque Cycle, and Cryptonomicon is an amazing read as well. Cheers.
