Trip to England: The Good Stuff.
As previously mentioned before went to Sudely castle and it was lovely and one of my fave places to visit, and gave me a hankering for the era that I will be reading about.
We did Portsmouth (Pricey but worth it at 46pounds for 3 exhibits), and I saw the HMS Victory (awesome, but man it's so under renovations that you can't see the outside at all and it's all encased in a building; the audio tour was awesome though), the Warrior (much neater with a full deck and self-guided tour), and surprisingly my absolute unexpected favourite was the HMS Mary Rose (Tudor era warship wreck)....I was FASCINATED by a Carrack from that age and the archaeological finds were exquisite, and the layout of the exhibit was awesome. Like I was not expecting it to be the highlight of the Naval historical dockyards, but it was.
Saw Puzzlewood which was neat.
Went to Bourton-on-The-Water, which is a lovely little town with lots to see, had fish & chips there and it was awesome.
Went to Wales, Dunraven Cove (famously the Doomsday beach in Docto Who where Rose said goodbye to Ten from the other universe) and it was a lovely day at the seaside.
Went to Cheddar and saw the gorge and had cheese!
Things I drank (that were explicitly English):
Carling (good light beer; nothing special)
Thatchers Gold (one of the better ciders I've had in my life)
Thatcher's Katy (Even better than Gold, and made me wish they sold them here)
Henry Weston Dry (cider; tasted like the piss of an old homeless man...ugh...utterly disgusting)
Fanta Fruit Twist (I don't drink much pop these days but we don't have this flavour in Canada, it was good)
Things I ate (that were explicitly English):
Sausage roll (it's fine, nothing to write home about)
Steak and Ale Pie (Really awesome, would eat it too much if I lived there)
A Cornish Pasty (DAMNED tasty and served to me by a guy with an actual Cornish accent)
A cheese & Onion Pasty (meh, not terrible but put to shame by the above meat one)
Aged Cheese from Cheddar (The home of Cheese and SO good)
English sausages (Savoury ones, really good....we don't have sausages this good in Canada)
Every brand of Salt and Malt vinegar crisps I could find...(all good, but top tier were Piper and Tyrrells for my money)
Anyways, hated the family we stayed with (see messing thread), but loved the things I saw and the English countryside.
