My second son was born the other day (12/1/12), in the quickest delivery known to man.
I got the call at 12.20pm at work. She said her waters had gone, but there was no pain, and she'd had no pain leading up to it. I needn't worry, I was told, just head home.
I arrived home at 13.00 at the same time as my mother and sister who had been picking my 3 year old son up from nursery as my partner obviously couldn't (she was actually just about to leave the house to go and get him whilst congratulating herself on putting her shoes on successfully by herself, when her waters broke!! Timing!) and my sisters 2 year old son.
We had a mill about and my Woman said I could get changed and have a shower, and that the hospital would only tell her to stay at home anyway.
I went upstairs and changed but didn't shower. When I came back down she was in pain. She told me that we better leave. My mother took my son away and they all left.
My partner was in real pain now. We got in the car around 13.30.
It's not far to the hospital, but the whole way my good lady was in the back shouting that she was going to push and have the baby!!
A comical story in it's own right for another time perhaps.
We hot to the hospital (double parked) at 13.45.
The birthing suite is located right at the entrance so we walked straight in.
It wasn't busy and we were taken straight to an assessment room where, after a quick examination, the midwife declared that my partner was FULLY DILATED and that the baby was coming.
It was then that the midwife logged the time at 13.50, I remember vividly seeing that time, then asked my partner to get in the chair to go to one of the birthing rooms. Just as she got up to do so, she collapsed again screaming that he was coming!!
The midwife started ordering her trainee to get some towels ready, I thought at one point she was going to say, "and boil some water too!!!" haha.
Anyway, the contractions ebbed and she managed to get on the chair and we went to a birthing room down the corridor.
Now, this was a birthing suite, not a delivery room. So there was no bed or any visible medical equipment. It just looked like living room with a big rubber ball, a beanbag and a sofa. This unnerved me slightly and my partner asked where the bed was!
There wasn't even any time to answer! She got down over the beanbag, pushed 4 times, and he came out at 1401!!!!
Madness.
By the time she had the afterbirth, the total labour time was less than one and a half hours.
We were back in the house for 8.30, everything cool, with our 6lb 9oz boy.
He's gorgeous.
Total contrast to our first birth which was naughty.
Pure relief.
So now we're just adjusting to life with 2 kids in our brand new house, which has had a lot of finishing touches done to it in the last week or so (including my broadband yesterday!) and really feels like home now.
I'm waiting for the catch.
Life's too good.
