Got the keys and signed for my new place on Monday. Also managed to get a good deal on a bed and a fridge. My stuff that has been in storage here for the last 5 years was moved in to the new place today along with the bed (soooooo comfy!). Tomorrow will be my stuff from Darwin and a few things I had here at Mums, including about 50 or so books. So for the first time in a long time all my stuff will be in one place.

GF is coming to stay from Jan 3 - 10. When I was talking to her about it when we were in Sydney for U2 on the weekend before last she was more excited by the thought of gaining unfettered access to my books than anything else. :rant:

Therefore, she will be helping me buy more bookcases and putting all the books (estimated 2500 or so) up in alphabetical order before being allowed to pillage. :blink:

Priorities.

Had a party with my brother and my girl-harem from highschool (reunion, not underage), and it degenerated rapidly into Olde English innuendo, Boggle, and beer drinking.

Not that I ever needed justification, but this story gives me yet another reason to enjoy my rampant chocoholism.

Chocolate better cure for common cold than echinacea

* From: NewsCore
* December 22, 2010 12:35AM

PEOPLE who buy echinacea to stave off a common cold are wasting their money and should buy chocolate instead, two separate scientific studies have claimed.

Echinacea, which is believed to minimise the impact of a common cold, was studied by scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health.

They found the over-the-counter herbal treatment only slightly delayed cold symptoms

In tests of 719 people, aged between 12 and 80, volunteers were randomly given either no pill, a pill they knew contained echinacea, or a pill that could have been echinacea or a placebo.

Those who received echinacea saw the duration of their cold reduced by seven to 10 hours.

"Trends were in the direction of benefit, amounting to an average half-day reduction in the duration of a weeklong cold or an approximate 10 percent reduction in overall severity," said Bruce Barrett, the lead researcher, writing in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

"However, this dose regimen did not make a large impact on the course of the common cold, compared either to blinded placebo or to no pills," he concluded.

In the UK, scientists at a British-based drugs company called SEEK, working with experts at Hull Cough Clinic, said that a naturally-occurring substance in cocoa - theobromine - has been shown to prevent the key features of a persistent cough.

Seek was developing a medication based on theobromine, which is found in significant quantities in cocoa-based products and which it says "has been shown to inhibit the inappropriate firing of the vagus nerve, which is a key feature of persistent cough.”

Professor Alyn Morice from the clinic, said, "Due to the drawbacks of current opioid drugs such as codeine, we are in desperate need of a non-opioid treatment with a drastically improved side effect profile for patients."

I'm also fairly sure echinacea was shown to be barely more than a placebo years ago.

I was unsure whether or not this would be better in the Funny Videos thread, but I figure the higher traffic for this one would mean it could brighten up the day some of you toiling away in your own little hells with fluorescent lighting aka offices.

Definitely safe for work, but you will get some odd looks if your speakers are turned up high. :)

Wicked awesome party last night. It was a surprise one for a friend of ours, known hereafter as Linda, and someone to whom I thought I was attracted. So, she came, we cheered, and had a good time. Met some new people, caught up with some old friends, and so on it went. Then I slept over at the house the party was at (not the friend for whom we had held he party), and we basically played Guitar Hero all night. It was awesome. Me and Linda got in some good chatting time, and things were going well. So, at about 9:30 PM, after we'd pretty much clocked the game, we headed off to the city to go our separate ways. But during the course of the night, I'd handed over the gifts I'd bought Linda. There was, to make a long story short, a lot. She was really happy with it.

But just as we had departed the other sleepoverees, and were heading off to our separate tram stops, this conversation ensued:

Linda: I don't like you. (more than a friend like, not friendship like)
Me: Why not? :) (not having realised this)
Linda: Because I don't want you to get hurt.
Me: But I like you as a friend.
Linda: That's not what other people have been saying.
Me: Well, "other people" are wrong.

Basically, the rest of our conversation had us resolving that neither considered the other more than a really good friend. When we parted, we exchanged a massive hug.

Wondering why this is in the happy thread? Well, I had been trying to convince myself that I liked her more than a friend, which, deep down, I knew wasn't true. I kept at it-bought her all those gifts-and trying to get closer to her. Which I still want to do, because she's a fantastic person. But by saying those things, she cleared up all my confusion. Now I won't feel like I should be doing something when I'm around her, instead of just relaxing and enjoying her company. I liker her, she likes me. That's good enough in my book. I mean, I might look back and think I was an idiot for not pursuing it, but I can't see myself doing that. I woukdn't say I'm happy, but I do feel more content about the whole thing. And maybe that's better than any relationship.

Oh, and angsty teenage rant over. Thanks for tuning in. :)
