Home a day early for the dentist. This is not making me happy.

What IS making me happy is a package arrived a week early

Spoiler

It's a 50lb draw. Mongolian style recurve. Wonderful stuff. All I need now is time to practice with it

It's the falconry centre's Harry Potter weekend starting tomorrow. Hordes of children aside, it's a good laugh, all the staff are in character and it's generally a lovely weekend.

I promise if anyone gets any photos of me dressed up I'll post them for general entertainment!

Our son was born yesterday at 6pm!

Both mom and son doing well, and it was a fast and easy delivery.

We named him Grayson.

Can't remember if I've seen you post about it before and if I asked/commented already. Do you work at a falconry center??!! Sigh. I'm sure its not all roses (what job is) but to be around birds of prey all day...

I volunteer there at weekends - sensible adult job in the week sadly. It is very rewarding though! Tiste can confirm, he's been over to see it!

That rings a bell so I must have asked you previously. I'm jealous. Been obsessed with birds of prey since a book I read at the age of about 11. Joined a falconry club in New Jersey, back when I lived there, just to have an excuse to be around them close up. Unfortunately, becoming an actual falconer is one of those "If I were to ever hit the lottery" dreams. The good thing about mild winters in Florida, though, is that plenty of hawks, falcons and eagles stop here for migration. I expect to see the first of many American kestrels any day now.

You have to do an apprenticeship over there don't you, if I recall correctly? I know it's a much more regulated thing than it is over here. American kestrels are beautiful - so I'm jealous in turn

Yes, you have to start as an apprentice with an established falconer for a sponsor and in most places that I know of your first bird can only be an American kestrel or a red tailed hawk. Although, I believe I read that Montana is close to making prairie falcons allowable for apprentices there! Then there is a journeyman period and eventually, master falconer. The sport is pretty heavily regulated by all accounts. Surely not just anyone can go out and get a bird and practice it there? There is some amount of licensing and hoops to jump through?

Congratulations QT, that's awesome!

Although I'm a little disappointed you didn't name him something more appropriate, like Vader, or Luke, or Emperor Sheev Palpatine.

Do the falcons dress as owls for Harry Potter week?
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Been a while since I've, well, done anything hereabouts, but I guess I can tell y'all I'm happy winning the Rejoice pre-order contest.

So if you were in my shady shoes, what would you have liked to talked to Steven about?
