To prematurely celebrate my birthday I spent yesterday afternoon shopping for a new suit. I bought a dark blue linen-wool suit that is glorious! It's being fitted and I'll pick it up after work today as a gift for myself. I also bought some nice wine and a bottle of gin for tonight. Being thirty is not so bad, I have to say.

Happy Birthday Morgoth! Gin and a new suit sound excellent birthday gifts to ones-self. Enjoy your day!

Ah Hendricks, wonderful stuff.
If you're ever bouncing through an airport with a decent sized duty free in it keep an eye out for Cahrûn gin. Scottish small batch, lovely with a slice of apple in it
Eta.
Flights from Dublin up to Finland are at about the £200 mark at the minute. Will pm you tomorrow when I know more about my time off in England
Double eta -
Flights from London to the frigid north under the ton return. Will be working in Southampton so this is an attractive prospect

Now that you're 30 your birthdays have to become staid responsible affairs with no excessive consumption.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Nice to run into Imperial Historian in Manchester the other day. Always good to see a Malazite in the wild!

My birthday was a lot of fun. Just a few friends, lots of wine and an excellent dinner I made. On saturday we'll have the real party, but this was a nice and comfortable affair

Out of sheer boredom (and probably quite a lot of suppressed frustration at never having any time to draw) last week I drew a large picture of Darujhistan in black marker on a white board in the anaesthetic room during a trauma list. With Moons Spawn overhead. And dragons.
I'm happy because people have been taking pictures of it, asking who drew it, and I've since had two messages left from people who want me to do them a picture.
I don't know where I'll find the time to do that, but it could lead to more if I can finally get around to picking up a pen or brush.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Tea. It's a great day when I find a new awesome sort of tea.

I swear to god, every single brand of tea tastes the same. Except for green tea, which tastes like water. I have a feeling that there is a global conspiracy to make me believe different kinds of tea are somehow different.
What's making me happy is that I just registered for next session's courses, and I got places in 8 awesome sounding classes that work towards my degree (all with great profs) and two writing intensive poli-sci courses because I'm weird and I like writing 2500 words about politics.
Six years ago I never would've believed that "future me" would be anticipating the start of the academic year.

Only if you drink the cheap-ass stuff that tastes like I imagine piss would taste, and does its very best to make your tasting buds run away screaming when it's cheap green tea. I find that especially green tea is very difficult to get right, as a. you need to like the taste (or learn to like it) and b., the quality is particularly important, as green tea has a tendency to get very bitter when lower quality. I used to hate it before I finally managed to be able to afford at least some basic quality in my tea. Now, I love it. Black tea is a bit easier to get right.
That said, I can totally see how if you're not into tea, it all tastes very much alike. The differences - especially within, say, green teas - can be very subtle. I spent quite a while finding, for example, the just right brand for orange-flavoured green tea, and finally, FINALLY, today, I have found the one that's just on the spot. It's love. But again, it's not everyone's - sorry for the terrible pun - cup of tea.
And thumbs up to your academic enthusiasm

I'm Canadian, and I'm annoyed that when I go into the States and ask for tea I have to clarify that it should be "hot tea" as their default is apparently iced tea. The first time it happened (in Florida I think?) I asked for tea and the waitress said "Hot tea?" and I goggled at her and was like "Of course hot tea."
Like WTF?

With my stomach issues, I had to give up (mostly) on coffee (I sometimes spoil myself on the weekend and reap the horrid rewards) and switch over to tea (no milk even) with some sugar.
Trust me, I used to mainline coffee throughout the day and I can't anymore. My inherited stomach issues won't allow it. Thanks Dad!

I get the blank looks when I ask for tea @ Starbucks sometimes. I've learned to ignore them.
