Who said anything about buying the book???

And I agree, its not priority to finish the series, it just must eventually be done.

The amount of cliches in the book are incredible.

Im not sure they'res something in the whole book that isnt in another one. Apart from maybe the names. Which I could live with if it was well written. Pity it isnt that either then eh?

Back when it was written/ first published, it was pretty darn fresh. I think it was a pretty lean time for fantasy fiction. Apart from stuff like Dragonlance and Covenant and Shannara (and this is before Badkind, no?) there wasn't much by way of a fantasy saga that did not involve a central magical object (Ring for LOTR/ Covenant etc.).

RJ (he said) purposely wrote the first book or two like LOTR (Shire/ Two Rivers, entry to wider, badder world, etc.) so people would be drawn in familiarly.

Whatever you may think of the series, the fact is RJ helped writers like Martin, Badkind and so on to get into the genre and sell books. His sales numbers showed you could still write in the genre and rise to bestseller lists...

It would be very difficult to get some of the early books in a movie; something like Eye of the World or Shadow Rising would have to get like a 5-6 hour movie just to get something like 50-60% material in and do some justice.

I can definitely imagine squeezing books 8 9 and 10 all in one movie and making it no more than 3 hours though. At that point he's spending 95% of his text in people's conscious minds mulling over the same things repeatedly.

Now I am confused
I thought Grief was referring to Paolini there, not RJ.

I have nothing against RJ, and have enjoyed reading his work.

That's right. Back then it was a pretty lean time. Even though it's not as good as a lot of the stuff out there now, it was really cool back then.
I admit, I only read through book 4 because I lost interest, but I would still be willing to give the movie a chance.

I don't think it would be a problem making at least the first books into 2-3 hour movies.

The books are long, but that's not because it's chalk full of action and important character conversations. It's just endless, never ending trecks across country or days on a ship. The books are packed with needless filler.

The fact that Jordan himself wanted Red Eagle to nothing to do with his work, and he also said that it wouldn't work as a film is not giving me much hope.

I know that it was said Lord of the Rings was unfilmable, and that worked, but LotR is not the Wheel of the Time. As much as i love the series, even the later books, it feels like a bit of a wreck waiting to happen to me.

What i don't get is why the rights to the Wheel of Time, was sold after his death, with no regards to how he thought his work should end up.

The thing that would concern me most about a WoT movie is the way hollywood would twist the less important stuff into defining scenes of the movie...like in LOTR how they played up Aragorn and Whasserface Elf Lady Liv Tyler's love and all that. I remember it being at best a passing mention in the books. In the movies, it took up 10 minute scenes.

I can just see them making Rand and Egwene out to be some kind of retarded fantasy romeo and juliet at the expense of some other really great plot elements. I can also see the violence with the trolloc raids getting played down just to make a PG rating or something. IMO the movie will suck balls. Unless they're going to throw a LOTR budget at it it will suck balls.

On the other hand, I find they generally do a good job with swords in most movies and I'd really like to see what they do with the heron-blade. Lan and Moiraine could be a very entertaining duo to watch if they throw a bit of humor and "ugh....MEN" jokes in there.

Mainly though, I want to see a fade. They are my favourite badguy from any fantasy book I've ever read. Just so creepy how they aren't affected by moving air and they can disappear when looked at from the side. Sweet.

Truly, if they cut out the extraneous crap, they might do it in 2-3 films.

Look at the major plot threads

1)Rand vs the DarK One obviously
2)Rand vs his own coming to grips with his power
3)Men who can channel returning to the world vs the Aes Sedai
4)Perrin's plot thread
5)Mat's plot thread
6)Rand vs the voices in his head

Cool Subplots

1)Rand's menage a' trois with Min, Aviendha, Elayne
2)Moiraine

WHAT I WANT TO SEE

1)Rand throwing down against either Demandred, Taim, or killing that freak Shaidar Haran.
2)Rand annihilating just one FEMALE forsaken and dumping that "Can't hurt a woman crap."

All the filmmakers have to do is get to the POINT. This is the kind of story SE professed to despise in one of his interviews--"Stay on the farm, lad, it's cozier."

Strange as it sounds, I think a movie might be best served by rearranging the chronology of the novels. Rand's awareness of his own power seem to advance and recede and IMHO the movie would be best served by a steady upwards path in awareness. God help us, if they use the Matrix model and make him a god too early and end up with no place to go...
