Been awhile since I read this book, but, I am wondering, what was the secret Mappo was so worried about Icarium from discovering? (POSSIBLE SPOILER AHEAD)

Spoiler

Details. :p

Uh, well, there are kind of several, if I'm following the gist of your question right. I'll spoiler them just in case.

Mappo is basically trying to save Icarium from remembering the horrors in his own past - he's killed a lot of people;)

Mostly he's there to prevent him from falling into rage. Which is why he is careful to knock him out cold everytime said danger lurks too close...

The secret is that Icarium rage is uncontrollable when ignited.

If he gets angry enough, he kills and just doesn't stop. He'll wipe out cities and even civilisations. He can't help it, the need to met out justice. He's mentally injured, for reasons you'll find out in later books.

It's not really a spoiler to say so, it doesn't affect anything you'll read. Icarium comes close to losing control end of Deadhouse Gates. It's in The Bonehunters you'll see him go full berseker against a wide range of powerful creatures -- of all whom are blasted away. Heh. You'll understand why he needs . . . Azathing.
If there were no smart people others wouldn't feel inadequate.

Right?

Has it been written as to why Icarium is so violent and how does he have these powers?
On the surface he seems such a nice chap.

Errr... I don't know if you've finished the book yet. Spoilers...

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

It has not been properly explained why Icarium is so dangerous that even the gods fear him, but we can make a guess. His father, Gothos is one of the most powerfull Jaghut that has ever lived, that means that Icarium - his Jhag mixed blood heritage aside - may have the power of a Jaghut Tyrant. A Jaghut Tyrant is easily able to do the things that Icarium has been said to do. Add to that the fact that Azath may have afflicted him with some kind of chaotic virus thingy that twisted that power and you have a very dangerous person with absolutly no control himself.

Sorry to dredge up on old thread, but it's new to me. :D I just finished Deadhouse Gates and I believe it says Icarium damaged a warren and was in turn damaged in doing so. I'm not sure why or how he damaged a warren trying to free his father from an Azath. Isn't there remains of a damaged, twisted warren in the desert though? Now for some reason I can't remember which characters end up in it. Anyone recall? And is it perhaps the same warren that Icarium damaged?

Well there's the warren that Kulp, Stormy, Gesler, Felisin, Baudin, Heboric and Truth sail through after leaving Otataral island and fleeing from the crazy mage in the sky, if that's the warren you're thinking of? {Though I should note here that they go through 3 warrens, the first is the one that might fit your description (the second is the Shadow realm and the third is a realm of fire).}

If so, then good on ya for thinking about that. At this point I can't say if Iccy damaged that warren or not because if is not known.

If that's not the warren you're thinking of then I have no idea.

I want to read about him attacking the Azath. So far that sounds like the most entertaining fight with Icarium. I either want that or when he destroyed Raraku. I'd like to know how they calmed him down.

I looked it up again last night. There's a mangled warren around the Azath Tremerlor. As they get closer Mappo recalls the stories that Icarium first appeared walking out of Raraku (sp? - the big desert), which is where they are now of course, and wonders if they are entering the source of Icarium's rage. So yeah, it seems that Icarium's assault on an Azath in an attempt to free his father tore up an entire warren and damaged him in turn.

Sent to kill him?

Don't you mean control him? He was supposed to be the safe guard against Iccy going mental at the wrong times, stearing the Jhag where the NO wanted him.

It's not certain Mappo even could kill him.

As Apt said, Mappo's main purpose was to keep Iccy as under control as possible, but further to that I believe that there might've been some talk of the NOs wanting Mappo to lead Iccy into the grounds of Tremorlor and let him be taken by the Azath house perhaps?

I believe that his toblakai heritage from his mothers side also contributes to his rage attacks as well.
