Okay... read the passage again; Anomander was clearly trying to kill Dassem. The only reason he placed his sword the way he did is because he knew he couldn't beat Dassem so he decided it's better he die by DP than by Grief/Vengeance. It's not like he planned for Dassem to be there; he could have stabbed himself. Face it, in terms of sword skill, Dassem > Rake

Also, I bet Anomander would be overwhelmed in a fight vs angry Icarium (he'd probably hold up for a very respectable time though).

Oh and he's D-E-A-D! And never coming back.

Agraba
what reason did anomander have to kill dassem?
Also Dassem had Vengeance which gave him a boost
on the other hand Anomander had an overloaded Dragnipur
So you cant really say that Dassem is better in terms of skill

23.Awesome name and nicknames

Read the passage properly, it seems to be a matter of opinion, but "Cheated" and it seeming wrong etc, all point to the fact he wasn't trying to kill Dassem, his sadness etc. Dassem knew Rake had let him kill him, after all, why would you cry after killing someone who was trying to kill you.

Not sure about Icarium, cause hes rather unpredictable, but I'm damn sure that if Rake had wanted to kill Dassem he would've, also grief/vengeance doesn't make much difference, as its clearly stated that Dragnipurs power overwhelms it.

In the end you've kinda got to feel sorry for Dassem, as he was forced by Rake to kill him, someone who it seems he grealy respected from his reaction.

Rake would beat Dasseem if they both were fighting w/ regular swords and the Universe itself was hanging in the balance. Nuff said. Cult, you're wrong :p

@Trouble---Your post was hilarious and awesome.

24. Has possibly the best name in the book
25. Is apparently godly at that chess like game the andii play
26. Uses herbal essences to keep his hair so damn GOOD
27. Refuses to be a god
29. Encourages people to deny the number 28

Oh yeah, can anyone point me to where it says for certain hes dead, cause im still a bit unsure with all this talk of returning to Kurald Galain, entwining with MD etc, is this syaing hes dead, or moved on to some sort of afterlife, or not dead, or what?
I know it says hes shredded by chaos, but later says his souls returned to KG. Hoping the next couple of books will reveal a definitive answer.

Think the reference to dassem's will was put in just to remind that he will be unbeatable with 'vengeance' in his hands.
anyway, its a sort of quandary: great if he is present in the next two books, but that would make TTH somewhat useless. I wouldnt be surprised though if rake is continued to be referenced by other characters, such as in MT, BH and RG, where each reference shows him to be more and more powerful/whatever. maybe we will get a POV from Dassem showing he thought he was going to lose that fight :p

You know...in reality they both wanted to lose that fight. Rake had to so he could go and save the Universe, Dassem had to to get to Hood.

Hood also hints that without him, souls will return to there gods, therefore Rake goes back to KG and therefore MD...maybe...perhaps...I don't know.

Well we know Rake and MD are "intertwined", but it's confusing.

Rake did not want to kill Dassem, he did not want Dassem to get to Hood, also he needed Dassem to kill him (Rake) thus ensuring completion of cleverly, and painstakingly laid plan. Oh, and he did not get ripped up by Chaos but gave himself, his power to the Gate in order to move it out of Dragnipur and out onto the city.

Also, since he can veer into a Dwagon....surely that does not count as bestiality does it?

Yeah, that fight was awesome on so many levels - two men fighting the best fight ever, both wanting the other to kill him - in a 'to win you have to lose' kinda way. Poetic and complete WIN. Karsa's exclamation "Cheated!" just put words on in. It must be the best fight ever in fiction - at least one of the best.

Man, I miss reading the book so much. :p *goes off to read it again*

That whole last couple of scenes were just powerful. Draconus falling to his knees in awe is still sticking with me.

31. as Gem Windcaster said... staged the best duel in all of fantasy... and contender for best fighting scene ever written in any genre.
32. obviously had the patience of a saint (for Crone to still be alive)
33. would have won the fancy dress if they'd gotten round to the competition :p

34. Was the only man who Gothos respected, and whom Gothos thought was always right.

Rake was awesome. I do believe he would have beaten Dessem if he wanted to, Dessem was very much emotional, whereas Rake as we know tends to be COOL and collected. Plus Rake was fighting with the weight of all the dead/Dragnipur on him which would have crushed most other people.
