So I've got a meager music collection. I generally mooch off of other people's music, but I've finally got my own apartment, and that's not really going to happen as much. And since I project myself onto everyone I meet, EVERYBODY must need some new music!

SO- MUSIC EXCHANGE TIME

If you're into it, drop a couple names that should be listened to, but that we probably haven't heard, and maybe a genre request. In gratitude, this should be reciprocated.

I see a musical version of the "First thing to come to mind" thread.

Apocalyptica
VNV Nation
The Shins (my mainstream choice of the day)
Flametal
and finally The Black Mages (for any videogame nerds they're the dudes who did basically ALL the music for my avatar's source series. 12 games and counting...)
For me, some cool metal bands would be appreciated- since I've just been converted from my 60s - 70s rock roots.

For Metal i would try

Trivium
Lacuna Coil
Zakk Wylde (his work in Pride and Glory, Black label Soicety and his solo self is all good)
Down

For rock

Marion Raven

Sorry if you have heard of all these before, but is australia none of these bands gets played on the radio so they are not well known where i live.

Not into Metal, so i can't help you there. But i'll give you several other artists/bands/albums worth checking out.

AMADOU Y MARIAM - Dimanche a Bamako (this is an easy intro to African music, Senegal in this case, sung in french, and this album is produced by Manu Chao). It has a really nice sound.

MOGWAI - Named after the famous Gremlin, this is a Scottish (mostly instrumental) alternative rock band. Opinions were divided on their last album (Mr. Beast) since there were some indistinct lyrics, but i quite liked a lot of it. I would recommend checking out an earlier album of theirs though, Happy Songs For Happy People.

CALEXICO - A pretty cool band from Tucson, Arizona. Named after the town bordering California/Mexico, their music could be described as socially aware, often dealing with themes like immigration. Again generally classed as an "Alternative" band, but with elements of folk, country and some mariachi. "Feast of Wire" is a good place to start.

BAND OF HORSES - A more straightforward alternative rock band. A couple of good albums under their belt already. Not as pop sounding as The Shins, but you might like 'em.

KRUDER AND DORFMEISTER - And changing gears again, we have a pair of older drum'n'bass/electronica producers. Some great individual tracks and remixes, but their album, "The K&D Sessions" is one of the best electronica albums ever in my opinion (Disk One alone is awesome). Perfect chilled out jazzy electronica. IF you like your bass.

It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt - Mark Twain

They'll drag you down to their level, and then beat you with experience!

Righteous, all. I realize, in retrospect that the qualifications of "not well known" are highly geography-dependent. >.<

I've not heard them, though lobo. But from snippets from the web, Lacuna and Marion Raven sound pretty good.

And binder- Kruder and Dorfmeister is AWESOME

Well since your 19 I'd suggest some older metal bands you might be less familiar with and their albums (they are fairly well known but if youd have asked me in 1998 what the best metal abum was from 15 years ago I'd have only known about 2 bands!) I think are their best, don't mean to be patronising:

Fear Factory -Demanufacture
Slayer - Seasons in the Abyss/Reign in Blood
Sepultura - Chaos AD
Machine Head - Burn My Eyes
Pantera -Vulgar Display of Power
Ministry - Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and the Way to Suck Eggs

They are all good:

It depends what your into really I'd recomend coheed and cambria at the moment they are pretty good.

My faves at the moment would be:

Malcolm Middleton - fairly pacy Scots misery folk, used to be in a band called Arab Strap

The Wildhearts- English punk/rock and roll band loads of melodies but with a hard edge

Joanna Newsome - plays the harp, is awesome if a bit difficult to get into

Pendulum - rocky/tuney/electro/dance

David Bowie - Been leafing through the old boys stuff can be a bit hit and miss but throughout the 70s he was producing great songs.

Allow me to go retro - for you indie/alternative kids any of these will be a revelation:

The Pretty Things - Parachute
The Kinks - The Kink Kronikles
The Faces - Good Boys...When They're Asleep
Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstasy
Neil Young - Tonight's the Night

Two are compilations but considering that both just destroyed a couple twenty-something coworkers I figure they're worthy. Early metal would be an entirely different list.

Shameless plug time.
For anyone that's a Killers fan, you should check out Carolina Liar, very good band, and I wouldn't be surprised if they become quite big. Slowly picking up time on the radio.

I'm Not Over would be their first single.
"HAIL THE MARINES!"

...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead: "Source Tags & Codes" is a pretty sweet art rock album, haven't listened to their other ones though.
The Black Keys: Gritty, dirty, raw blues-rock duo. Check out "Thickfreakness" and "Rubber Factory."
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: Slick 3-piece pulling on noise rock, folk rock, blues rock and even some not bad gospel, give "B.R.M.C." and "Howl" a listen.
The Kills: Another raw two piece band beginning with blues and indie rock and in their third album branching out into something a little more electronica-influenced.
Vampire Weekend: Precocious (arguably to a fault) new band with a far more mainstream sound, but still high quality and almost deserving all their acclaim.
