Is anyone else wondering what the deal is with that blood that Picker had to drink to get out of the place she was trapped in the Azath? As far as I know, the only blood drinking escapades we have come across previously relate to Tiam's blood.

A soletaken Picker dragon, anyone?

Oh god, let's hope not...

I didn't understand any of Picker's storyline, to be honest. I mean, I know what she was trying to do, but what the hell happened? Some random thing attacked her and dumped her in Gruntle's dream-world-that-is-actually-the-distant-past... explain?

The way I read it was that in trying to contact Paran, Picker risked being noticed by other Azathian powers, or of getting lost. She gets grabbed by some other power, then perhaps Treach asserts his claim on her (the torcs) to free her only for her to get lost. After that point I'll have to re-read.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Uhm, I saw someone suggesting the blood was draconean in an other thread aswell and I don't quite understand that assumption.

It's big containers filled with blood, where is the most likely place the stuff came from? Worship. It's most likely sacrificial or a toll. I like the idea of blood being a medium for transcending boundaries in the pantheon, like water in Constantine.

In the Malaz world, blood denotes power so i thought that Toc tells her to drink the blood so that she could return to her body by the power of the blood she drank.

I agree, Picker doesn't seem an important enough character to drink the blood of Tiam. I thought it interesting, though, that after she was told what the blood was she was even less inclined to drink it. That could be just as true, though, if she learnt it was human blood from sacrifices rather than just animal blood or something.

It's all a bit bizarre, but I'm going to go for it being regular sacrificial human blood (!?). I agree there is nothing to suggest it is Tiam's blood other than the fact that it is blood that she drinks that gives her power enough to escape.

Well that's an aaaumption you'd be a fool to make where SE is concerned. Her reaction suggests to me there was something out of the ordinary about it, I'd have assumed it was human, perhaps it was kitten blood.

WereCat! Raarrgghhh!

Well, we know that she is basically adepted to High House War now ("I ride to all the gods of war. Do you understand?"). I imagine it was some animal blood, as since the death of Fener, all the gods of war (Treach, Togg & Fanderay, random Pedantic War Bear god) have been animals. Plus, the leaders of High House War are T & F (those sexy wolves). My opinion. Probably worthless.

I don't know that Treach asserted a claim on her, I thought he was defending her because he felt he owed her for carrying the torcs.

It seemed more general than specifically Treach - more as tho Toc tasked her with a service to the House of War. Curiously, the service was to lead Karsa to battle (assuming it was Karsa - Toc was a bit vague, referring to 'the killer').

I liked this development for a few reasons - 1) Picker was always a great character, even back to her brief appearance in GotM, and 2) it involved the Draujhistan BBs in the bigger plotline of the CG, as well as the Tyrant plot and especially 3) Karsa's plot. "Have i told you i like Malazans?" :(

I think the blood itself was just a source of power to send Picker's soul back to her body. That said between the blood and "torc-bearer", i suspect there are bigger things ahead for her.

- Abyss, ...and yes, Picker was in GotM...

Didn't she stab Paran? It's been 5 years since I last read it :(

Why does anyone even thing its the blood of Tiam? What would her blood be doing in some dingy cave?

When I read it, the first thing I thought was, "Hang on, pick a line and drink from it?" So does that mean the blood was coming from different places? Either way, I don't think it had any real effect other then grounind her spirit back to her body.

Holy crap, Trouble, you forgot who stabbed Paran in GOTM? Here's a hint: This girl was possessed by Cotillion. And it's not Tattersail.

GO REREAD THE SERIES YOU LAZY BASTARD
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Yeah, I don't see it being divine blood. If you're even remotely like most people, drinking blood of any sort is pretty repulsive. I don't believe Toc telling her specifically what it was made any real difference.

Tha fact that she was lying comatose in K'rul's old temple lends more credence to it being just some ordinary blood for ordinary blood drinkers.
