Ok, I'm getting ready to dig into Toll the Hounds. It has been a while since I read Reaper's Gale. Is there a plot summary available for Reaper's Gale?

Thanks

I think this link is broken. I just started Toll the Hounds and I'm a bit rusty on what's going on. Is there still a plot summary out there for Reaper's Gale?

I'm about a third of the way through re-reading it, so I can help a little.

Seren Pedac, Silchas, Udinaas, Fear, Wither and Kettle have been on the run from the Letherii Empire for a while heading East towards Bluerose. Some of them are in search of Scabandari Bloodeye, the rest are tagging along for various reasons. They are pretty spiteful to one another, especially when Clip (Anomander's Mortal Sword) joins them after they meet the hidden Tiste Andii.

After the traumas of Malaz Isle and defending the Throne, Quick Ben has been recuperating in the Shadow Realm with Onrack and Trull. Shadowthrone gives them a vague task and after travelling over water for a while, QB finds an exit to Tellann where Onrack becomes flesh and blood.

The legendary Awl warrior Redmask creates a bit of havoc spying in Letheras but soon returns to his people after a long exile. He more or less reunites the paltry remnants of his people and rallies them behind retaliating against the Letherii. We learn that the Grey Swords reached this continent after the events at Coral and were pretty much decimated. Toc/Anaster is the only one left alive and is a quasi-ally of the Awl, although only Redmask accords him any respect.

Meanwhile in the nearby Letherii settlement Drene, Tiste Edur Overseer Brohl Handar struggles against the Letherii political machine, namely the corrupt local Factor Letur Anict and the Patriotists. Anict has been selling shitty weapons and arms to the Awl. After Redmask organises a few attacks against Letherii farmers and such, war is declared and takes place on arcane Awl land (Bast Fulmar). Brohl Handar and Atri-Preda Bivatt are a part of the Letherii field army.

In Letheras, the political/economic forces represented by the Patriotists and the Liberty Consign have succeeded in reclaiming power in all but name. Rhulad still rules overall, but he is driven to extreme paranoia and mistrust of his own kind, thanks to Chancellor Triban Gnol. Palace Tiste Edur Bruthen Trana decides to force a confrontation after sympathetic Imperial Concubine Nisall is falsely charged with treason by the Letherii. After a coup of sorts by the Tiste Edur in the Palace, Nisall is dead, Gnol is injured and the Patriotists/Liberty Consign are pissed off.

Also in Letheras, the Patriotists have been imprisoning people who disagree with the status quo. We see the mind games and power struggle between Patriotist leader Invigilator Karos Invictad and his PA Tanal Yathvanar. Messed up Tanal is in love with his former academic turned political prisoner Janath Anar, but she is rescued by Bugg. The leader of the Liberty Consign Rautos Hivanar is preoccupied with excavating ancient relics and devices that are somehow linked with Icarium.

Tehol, Bugg and Ublala still provide comic relief. Janath joins them after her rescue. The Patriotists/Liberty Consign are now aware that someone is sabotaging their economy in a major way, they just don't know that Tehol is responsible.

The Errant is losing it as Gothos' icy enchantment over the continent wanes and he learns of the existence of Warrens (and his rival Paran). Feather Witch binds herself to him by becoming the Errant's Destriant (Destrai Anant) and tries to make Udinaas his Shield Anvil (T'orrud Segul). Power-hungry Feather Witch also tries bargaining with Hannan Mosag and the ghost of Ceda Kuru Qan. Hannan Mosag tasks Bruthen Trana with finding the spirit of Brys Beddict under the sea to save the Edur, as the swordsman is the only one who can slay Rhulad again.

The Tiste Edur fleet (carrying Taralack Veed, Icarium, Karsa, Samar Dev, Yan Tovis and Tomad Sengar) returns from their most recent sea voyage to find challengers to face their Emperor. Samar Dev captures the ghost of Kuru Qan in a knife and Ublala finds Karsa, believing him to be his god. We meet a few of the other champions - a bizarre monk, and a Seguleh.

The 14th are holed up in one of the Maiden Forts (the prison one), as discovered by undead pirate Shurq Elalle.

Then some stuff happens, like... we meet the simpleton Malazan mage Beak who dies after saving everyone. QB beats down the dragon sisters. Clip escapes after betraying everyone (shock horror). Redmasks's KCCM companions turn on him.

Then Trull dies >_<

Does someone want to take over?

Well, TtH doesn't really have all that much drawn from RG anyways...

Sure, though I don't know if I can be as extensive as you! Also, this won't be in book order...

The Challengers:
A bunch of champions from various cultures came back with the Edur fleet (oh yeah, the Edur fleet came back) to challenge Rhulad. Among them include Icarium with Taralack Veed, Karsa with Samar Dev, a Seguleh girl found unconscious near that city that got razed by the Edur in MoI, and a monk from Cabal. Icarium acts all mysterious, Taralack Veed starts doubting that Icarium can beat Rhulad and instead they'll destroy the world before Rhulad eventually kills Iccy, Samar Dev is pissed cause she thinks Karsa will die but Karsa is confident and drops some semi-subtle foreshadowing of what he'll do that Samar ignores because he keeps telling her to get naked, too. Eventually all the challengers die except Karsa and Iccy. Karsa fights Rhulad and severs Rhulad's sword arm, then uses all his ghosts and the ones in Samar's knife to manipulate the sword's power and travel to the CG's little island. There he flips the CG's tent, stabs Rhulad for reals (Rhulad dies for reals), slaps Withal and enters a portal aimed vaguely at his home after refusing to take the sword from himself (which was apparently the CG's plan ever since Karsa left Laederon). Withal and the Nachts destroy the sword.

The Shake:
Varat Taun warns Twilight of what Iccy can do so she flees up the coast. Turns out she is a princess of the Shake. At Maiden Island she confronts Brullyg who declared himself king and makes herself Queen. Deadsmell makes lots of interesting comments about the Shake being descended from the original Tiste Andii guardians of the Shore (but also have Edur blood), because that's where KCCM babies come from. Sort of.

The Awl war:
Redmask unites all the Awl and initially kicks some serious butt against the Letheri army coming for him. The Letheri start doing better though. They have a big final battle in a lot of mud and Redmask's two KCCM pals suddenly attack and kill him mid-battle. The Letheri win. The Barghast show up. Toc sacrifices himself to save a dozen or so Awl children, lead away to the Barghast by whatshisname. Tool is really sad because he watched Toc die. The Barghast slaughter the Letheri forces.

In the Refugium:
The Refugium is dying. Forum opinion varies as to why. Menandore teams up with Sheltatha and Sukul to try and take Scabby's finnest, but QB beats the crap out of them and Hedge cussers Sheltatha and Menandore (don't count Menandore out yet though as she was making deals with ST and Hood). Sukul gets away but is then killed by the three T'lan Imass who were real Bentract and had wanted to usurp Ulshun Pral (but later decided they liked him and the place). Onrack and Trull defend the portal entrance. Silchas, Clip, Wither, Kettle, Udinaas, Seren and Fear come through. Silchas, Clip and Wither team up to kill the rest. Fear dies, Wither explodes, Clip retreats, the rest are really wounded except Silchas who takes the Finnest but commits no more injury for fear of Kilava, except for stabbing Kettle and making a new Azath (because she's an Azath seed). Scabby's soul is stuck inside it. People slowly recover and QB, Hedge, Trull and Seren teleport to Letheras.

In Letheras:
The marines make it there, Beak dies to save them from a giant wave of magic. The Edur go back home. The main malazan army fights the main Letheri army so the marines go running around the city. The Seguleh shows up not dead and walks out. Fiddler's group make it to the colliseum, where Trull has found his dead brother after sexing his new girlfriend and is promptly stabbed by Sirryn Kanar. QB sends Sirryn to somewhere he wouldn't like to have a condo. Silchas Ruin shows up and is cussered away.

Brys returns from the undead. Feather Witch tries to make him the mortal sword of her new Errant cult, but the Errant drowns her. Brys gives Pinosel and Urkel the name of the sea-god so they can restrain it. The Huntress kills Hannan Mosag. Brys kills Karos Invictad. The Rat Catchers' Guild pays people to shout Tehol's name. Tehol is pronounced Emperor by the will of the people and marries Janath.

Icarium tries to replicate K'rul's forging of the warrens by slitting his wrists and walking into one of his magic buildings. It is broken and explodes outwards in a big white wave which kills people directly and indirectly (ie by debris). The ones killed directly appear to have their thoughts/brains/etc sucked out of them. Among the brain-sucked are Taralack Veed and Lether Anict. Varat Taun Triban Gnol and Senior Assessor also die.

Telorast and Curdle run off at some point.

D'rek, just one thing. It's not Karos Invinctad who kills Trull, it's that Captain that works for the Chancellor.
Brys kills Karos Invinctad after he stabs Tehol.

Wait, Varat Taun doesn't die, I'm sure I saw him namedropped somewhere in the end of RG.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

This link doesn't seem to lead to the right place anymore. Does anyone else have/know where to find a summary?

Thank you.
