What is up with Kruppe? From what we know he's simply a mortal man. And yet he just happens to know of all the goings-on in Darujhistan. He may be the master of spies, but there are just some events that even regular spies can't be present for. And it's not like we actually see Kruppe speaking with informants. He even knows of immediately impending arrivals to the Phoenix Inn, as he always predicts them just before they happen.

My thoughts is that Kruppe has the same power as Bottle. Except he can do it with meager insects (which I think Bottle can't), and considering his genius, he can do it with multiple insects at once, gaging all the information at the same time.

Otherwise Kruppe is simply a poetic device without any actual mechanical justification (which I wouldn't really mind).

And he can toss around Baruk's wards as if they are nothing?

Kruppe is not 'just a mortal man'. It is a silly speculation and must be done away with.

Kruppe has "a deck of dragons inside his head" or something like that and may also be a true precognetive. That along with powerfull skills at deduction makes him seem pretty much allknowing at times.

EDIT: He didn't toss any wards around, he avoided them. He didn't use strength, he used subtlety.

Well, it is implied and generally thought of that he has the deck in his head (like fiddler) and thought that he can guess a lot of what is to come. Second, he is maybe one of the smartest persons in the world, with QB as a second (that is WJ estimation).

Then you can count in the fact that he is buddy with an elder god krul which projects and aids him in unknown ways (like when he stood down brood).

Edit: Arg, curse you guys that are faster at responding!

I swear that passage reads 'Oh nasty wards! put them over here..' as if he bent them, got what he wanted, and went upstairs. (This was in Baruks cellar, getting the wine before he councils Baruk to take a long view on local events)

That seems unlikely considering he told what is most likely the tale of TtH to K'rul at the end.

Yeah. Kruppe has "a deck of dragon in his head" to use the quote, he is the leader of the most efficient and wide spreading network of spies in the largest city in the world, he's a high mage (though he might not be the strongest, he seems to be by far the most subtle in his control of the warrens) and he might very well be the most intelligent man alive.

He's a planner as well isn't he, he always has the answer to any eventuality and he is constantly underestimated since he conceals his identity and makes himself seem like a bit of a bufoon to those who do know him.

The Caladon Brood show down on the Rhivi Plains should have been enough to teach us that Kruppe is much more than meets the eye (greasy, greedy, overpurfumed, underwashed bastard!)

I dont think hes simply a plot device. As stated above there many different factors that are equivelent to been an ascendent. hes probably the best adept aswell which allows him to predict things.#

As for the baruks wards thing he doesnt bend them he simply gts wine from the cellar to which baruk replies something like 'from my cellar, there are twice as many wards as last time.' which means he didnt set them off at all

But remember lorn's ototarnal sword immediatly took him out of the picture so he's not completely all knowing (else he'd have avoided being their) and is no all powerful.

I think Kruppe is complicated. Quick Ben type complicated, though not necessarily possessing 12 souls, fiendishly clever, powerful magic user, and master spy.

These things together would amount to his near "omniscience".
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

"There are many ways to ascendancy, some more subtle than others" -Baruk while talking to Rake in GotM. He seems to be a proficent Mockra user, which would mean he could slide past wards etc.

I believe he is one of the High Mages there to defend against the Tyrants return, as he often calls Baruk "old friend" and is definetely good at magic, not in a Rake or Quick Ben way, but used more cunningly, hiding his purposes, passing wards, spying or whatever. He doesn't seem massively powerful, like Rake or Brood, otherwise he wouldn't have needed K'ruls assistance against Brood, although admittedly, this is just what one character believes, if they were wrong and it was Kruppes own power, then he may be some masswively strong ascendant in disguise. Personally I believe his greatest power is his vast intellect, of which only select few(Gothos, Rake, Quick Ben) can compare.

Ah, but did he actually know exactly what would happen and that things would work out ok, so let things play out that way? :D :D

I think one of the best moments in TtH is when Scillara is telling everyone at the Pheonix inn about their adventures in seven cities, it actually leaves Kruppe speachless the first time I believe! I guess this proves that he is not all seeing (at least not globally) as that was genuine shock. Had me cracking up that bit! I reckon that Kruppe is extremely powerful but a genuinely good character the fact that he could not prevent the death of Murillio shows that his power is limited although he did seam to be aware of the death before he was told.

We see all the Torrud Cabal at the end of TTH. If he was a member of the cabal he wouldnt simply be a errand boy for baruk. i know thats not srictly true but in GOTM theres alot to take with a pinch of salt. In GOTM baruk also says that Rallick is closer to him than Murillio Kruppe etc so hes not that close to Kruppe
