I just found out that my Now TV subscription was paid up until June 10th so I'm going to watch Chernobyl too! Told my wife it's pretty intense and harrowing but she still sounded interesting so we're going to get through it before the above date.

Incidentally, here's a joke:
Why shouldn't you trust Ukrainian underwear?
Chernobyl Fallout.

Apologies...

Hopefully you enjoy it!

Sidebar: I just found out the Icelandic show score composer (classic Cellist) Hildur Guðnadóttir used the actual sounds of an RBMK reactor to build the non-traditional parts of the score...and I'm even further astonished by the depth of devotion that went into making this show.

Well my wife made it 20 minutes before telling me she found it too heavy and as it was a true story, quite upsetting. Figured it's not going to get better in that respect so we bailed. I'm going to keep watching alone haha...

Yah. Chernobyl is excellent. Definitely difficult due to the subject matter though. Episode three is a doozy. Just know that you may have to take breaks during that particular episode. Agree that is might be some of the best HBO has delivered. I will be surprised if it doesn't receive awards.

[EDIT] Some of the coolest titled episodes too.

So what you're trying to say with all these glowing reviews is that CHERNOBYL is so hot right now?

It's 100% heavy subject matter, and the show doesn't shy away from it. Glad you'll keep watching though even if she's bailed.

She's good with violence and dark stuff as a general rule but if it feels real then she doesn't like it. For example the episode in Breaking Bad with the little kid in it was the point she stopped watching that...

Everything about the mini-series is award worthy, including the score/soundtrack. This song comes at the end, and puts the perfect stamp on some of the most intense television I've ever watched.

Tiste, when you're done, go listen to the podcast for it (conveniently called CHERNOBYL) each episode of the podcast goes into each episode of the show in more depth and tells you whats's reality, what's composite or compressed, and what is embellished (not much apparently) with the show runner/writer Craig Mazin. It's such a great little companion piece to the show.

--------

On my front, since I was so beyond impressed with him in CHERNOBYL, I'm going to check out THE TERROR for Jared Harris. Loved the book, and simply never got round to the show.

Oh man episode 2 cranks it up a bit. That they wouldn't listen to the guy who actually knows what he's talking about! Why??

Then the final scenes with the three men going inside... I don't think I took a breath for the final 10 minutes!!

Finished up CHERNOBYL last night. EASILY one of the finest mini-series I've ever seen. Jared Harris deserves a goddamned Emmy for his performance as Legasov.

I would even go out on a limb and say it's the best thing that HBO has made in my lifetime. I've liked other HBO shows (ROME, GoT ect.) a lot...but nothing that has affected me like this, or been written and presented this well.

Now I'm off to listen to the accompanying podcast about the show.

If you've not seen it. Watch it.

Just finished watching. Just incredible tv, moving and utterly absorbing.

Jared Harris was brilliant. In my ignorance, before I'd seen credits or anything, I said to my wife, 'He really reminds me of Richard Harris - something about his mouth and his voice.' Duh.

Watch it if you can. Thanks for the heads up about the podcast QT, I'll check it out.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Its excellent. Thoroughly riveting.

What works though is its all true (okay mostly true). This really happened, the stakes were that real, the politicking that stupid. It happened in 1986! The year I was born, I somehow had never put that together. I thought this was from way back in the sixties or seventies. Its horrifying! The source material is so good, I cant believe its not been done before. Making it a short and sweet 5 episodes was the right move, and I thank god they chose it.

It punches you in the gut the way GoT (fantasy cant) and its relevance to today and watching men fight something so impersonal as radiation makes it more powerful than many other true based dramas about say WW2.

Sheesh episode 3 also hit hard. Those miners were incredibly brave and I was so furious with the wife of the fireman... This show really punches hard and doesn't let up!

3 Episodes into THE TERROR and It's STUNNINGLY well done. REALLY enjoying it. A part of me has always wanted to make the trek (with my military/policeman/volunteer fireman brother-in-law) to King William Land and see the places where the Terror and the Erebus wrecked...but I'm also convinced that since there is only one town in the island (Gjoa Haven) of 1200 people, that it's not the most feasible trip. Still, FASCINATING show, and really nailing the "dread" of the book.

Just finished Chernobyl. Wow. I'm a bit raw from that, what an experience. What a harrowing and numbing experience.

Spoiler

Agree with QT, that has to be one of the best things I've ever watched.

I love that it begins and ends on the same line of dialogue "What is the cost of Lies?"

Also, there is some fantastic quotable dialogue in it (most of it Legasov's ) but my personal fave is "Every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. Soon or later that debt is paid."

Fun sidebar about writer/showrunner Craig Mazin. His freshman year roommate at Princeton was Ted Cruz (yes, THAT Ted Cruz), and he apparently hates him and makes regular fun of him on twitter. Which makes me happy because Ted Cruz is a blight on his country.

Oh is he the "Hey Ted Cruz didn't seem such an opponent of masturbation in college" guy? Haha that's so random that he also did the show...

Another tidbit: Ted Cruz is actually the Zodiac Killer.

That may have been him, yeah. LOL

He's really genial and well-spoken on the accompanying podcast (which I hope you listen to), and wrote the show because Chernobyl as an event in his youth fascinated him, but he realized he knew nothing of how it happened, why, and the lies....so he started digging.
