Magicians Episode 7, Mayakovsky Circumstances, was a B+ episode for me. Lots of great stuff, but they truncated the amount of time spent at Brakebills South (not sure why).

This episode was my favourite so far - finally we're seeing some character development. And I don't mean just in our main four (though mostly there) but also with Eliot and Margo, and with Julia.

FULLER HOUSE was renewed already by Netflix for Season 2. That's FAST.

Who is Janet?

In the books, the two older Physical Kids are Eliot and Janet. Somehow, Janet turned into Margo on the show, but Margo is acting differently than Janet would.

Janet was muuuuuuch more of a terrible person and manipulator, so she kinda turns the entire Physical Magic House into a co-dependent clique throughout the books because that's what's easiest for her to deal with. Margo isn't doing that (as shown by taking Todd to Ibiza), although she and Eliot have a strong bond.

Hey guys you gave me the expanse, the magicians and blindspot in recent months but I need a comedy. I dont think Fuller House is going to make the cut. Its fascinating to both know I once watched the show, recognize the characters and so on and yet have no real memory of it or nostalgia for it.

Any advice to newish comedy shows?

BROOKLYN 99 is fantastic, as is MODERN FAMILY.

If you're not opposed to the show being animated, Archer is absolutely hilarious. If you're looking for actual human acting, I totally agree on Modern Family. Brooklyn 99 isn't my style, but plenty of people seem to like it.

Finally catching up with season 8 of the Office.

James Spader is the damn man, but he has 0 chemistry with this cast. Huge miscast imo.

And who the fuck thought Nellie was a good character? I'm drawing a blank on a TV character I loathe more.

Oh, and Michaels gone, which obviously sucks.

Overall the season is a step down, but not as bad as if been lead to believe.

You're right about Spader but it does lead to a few funny/awkward moments.

Very generalized info that still might be considered "spoiler"ish, though I won't go into any plot detail:

Spoiler

Yes, my wife said the same thing last night. I dont get it.

I thought season 8 was actually decent for the first half, then about the time they went to Tallahassee it took a nose dive. On to season 9.

Yeah season 8 is the worst, and season 9 isn't much better but the last few episodes make up for it.

Agree with everything said above, Catherine Tate was a terrible addition to the car and the spoilered bit makes me mad... It was just unnecessary!

Worth it though.

Finally finished.

Although seasons 8-9 are a step down in quality, I dont think they would have been nearly as bad without the whole Andy debacle. Seriously, so much put into it, and none of it payed off. Worse, it didnt just fall flat, it was actually annoying.

Catherine Tates character got better once she stopped with the whole airhead, carefree, whatever schtick.

But yeah, the last few episodes were fantastic. Makes you really wish they would have went the whole Dwight as Regional Manager, Jim as Assistant to the Regional Manager, and Dwight as Assistant to the Assistant to the Regional Manager earlier. I couldve watched that all day.
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.

Oh, and i gave up on Jessica Jones after episode 10.

Dragging out storylines for the sake of more episodes drives me f'ing crazy.

Add that to how much the main character grates me and it just wasnt enough to keep going.

What baffled me is that Catherine Tate, when allowed to do her own particular brand of comedy is HILARIOUS (Catherine Tate Show, Doctor Who), but the Office writers pushed her into a really bad role with really bad writing.

A little Cat Tate being ingeniously funny for you all:

If anyone else is watching, Eliot and Margo campily delivering the next task together at the table with the finger sandwiches was probably the best scene in the entire show so far.

Eliot's comment about Quinten thinking, "Ok, but I'm not going first" busted me up.

Magicans Episode 8 - The rarely seen A+ episode is proper for this one.

The show has made itself similar and yet different from the books in all the right ways. Half the characters in the episode today were not in the books and they mattered, even if bit players. The dialogue is great, the story arcs are great, and holy fuck, the bloody wrecks The Beast leaves behind are tremendous.

It's funny, it's deeply affecting, it's sad, and it's hopeful. Wow.

Why don't you make a thread for it? I'm watching Ep now.

I'd like to, but there's no previous Magicians thread I can shunt all this into.

The Magicians worked a Haunted House story in Episode 9. CREEEEEEEEPY. (And very different from the books)

Quentin's enthusiasm and joy for all things Fillory is kinda cute and annoying, so the show giving Penny lots of opportunities to sarcastically comment on the nerdism is great.

Eliot = Scrumptulescent.

Julia's plotline goes somewhere completely out-of-books and it's a good place.

Overall, an A episode (some minor points not given for killing a new character off).

This show is fantastic and seems to be comfortable in several different tones. It's had a goofy quest episode that was great, it's had a haunted episode that was great, the "learn magic stuff" episode in the Antarctic was great, the "supervillain of the series wrecks shop" episode was great, and the rest were fairly solid.

If this were airing on CBS, it'd be a massive hit. I sincerely hope it gets more seasons.

Oh, just found out Sera Gamble is one of the showrunners. She worked for a while on Supernatural between 2009 and 2012, so that might help explain the writer/actor/director comfort with switching up between serious, goofy, and creepy with aplomb.

I really enjoyed the haunted house episode - I had to get up to pee and found myself genuinely creeped out while walking through my darkened house.

I saw that CRIMINAL MINDS was launching another spinoff series called Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, so I went back to watch the backdoor pilot episode they had last year to introduce the new cast, and the idea.

Now I hadn't watched Criminal Minds in some time, but what a godawful pile of shite that episode was. Shit acting, shit writing, weak plot, unlikeable characters. If this was the backdoor pilot I have no idea how they ever greenlit the series itself. Absolute pants.

I love backdoor pilots. I watched one from Webster a few weeks back for a show that was gonna quintuple down on the orphans, called Almost Home, and it was pretty sweet.

The best thing about them is that they so often come when a show is already out of ideas, so this bizarre high concept offshoot gets rammed in. I much prefer it to shoehorning in a pregnancy/baby/Cousin Oliver.

I suppose this works out better w/ cheesy sitcoms than it does hour-long murder shows though.
