After The Wire I just can't handle hollywood crime. The only crime series I could watch with a straight face since The Wire was Dexter (which I gave up early in season 5) and NCIS (which is just silly and you don't expect much substance anyway).

I will fully agree with Gothos here. The first season and even portions of the second are defo monster-of-the-week stuff with a vague overarcing plot scattered in. But S3 onwards is gold (for me so far anyways) and is starting to actually RIVAL Buffy for my fave supernatural show. Period.

Ah, that's not the way to do it, not with Supernatural. While it's certainly got a strong focus on 'freak of the week' and bottle episodes, the slow build of the long term arc and the antagonists is what makes it great*, at least for the first five seasons (I stopped watching there because that's when the initial showrunner planned to and where it had all been building to. It was meant to be temporary, but I haven't gone back yet, even though I hear it's still dead good for the most part).

(*especially the first one, which is kinda hokey beyond that arc. In a charming way, but it's notable how much the production values jump up and how the series gets used to what its stars acting skills are and aren't in season 2, and it only gets stronger from there. Season 5 is genuinely great)

If you ever get the urge to give it another try, do it proper, from the start.

I've only caught scattered episodes from all the seasons and I readily recognize that it's great.

It was a good situation that let them get past the rough start almost all shows have and figure out a way to keep going forwards in a budget conscious way that is much more appealing to me than Dr. Who's budget conscious stuff.

Must say that despite some skepticism, I liked seasons 7-9. Granted, it's hard to think of something interesting happening after what goes down in season 6, but I think they pulled it off. It's a bit downhill from S6, but not terribly so. And after the s10 hook, I can't wait for the new season.

After producing week after week of uninteresting stuff that the judges nonentheless tell her she's elevated...I don't even. I don't think a reality show has seemed so entirely fixed before. Literally anyone of the last ten contestants could have won over her and I'd believe it. Including Cutter.

I recently re-watched Seasons 1 - 6 and it's awesome. I'm a big fan (and not just because Dean is smoking hot, honest). Anything with a Trickster in specifically is great stuff and I love Sam's traditional line of "Think about it Dean; every culture in the world has it's own lore about X/Y/Z" to justify absolutely anything. I think Abyss would like it if he gave it a go. It's all tongue in cheek stuff with enough cheese to keep the fan girls interested but enough digs at themselves to make it entertaining. The first series is basically "Which classic movie shall we rip off this week?" (Jaws, Candyman, the works) and the story arc slowly beds in. It is like "X-Files Teens" which doesn't instantly sell itself but if you get on board with the angst it is worth it eventually. In later series once the story arc is firmly bedded in they start to laugh at themselves more and it gets much better. It is still quite formulaic and I wouldn't say they do anything original - for example there is an episode filmed in the first person with handheld cameras. I am puzzled as to whether they lack imagination or are paying homage to popular film and tv. The makers are either a little bit dumb or quite clever. The fact that I can't figure out which is appealing.

I have seen series 7 and bits of 8 and 9. They really should have ended it at 6 as it was a very satisfying ending (I cried ). Saying that, I have enjoyed the rest but the vibe has gone.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. This show got stronger at the end of season 1 but is still weak in my opinion and needs to do much more to impress me. If season 2 doesn't raise to my standards, then I'm dropping it.

Of the others, I've heard good things about Sleepy Hollow but I've never seen one episode myself (no time) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine was sorta funny for the episode or two that I watched. The rest of the shows listed are not my cup of tea (I've never watched them).

Definitely looking forward to Gotham. I hope it doesn't disappoint.

Jed Whedon and Maurissa have said in interviews that they had to spend a lot of S1 laying groundwork for the world...and claim that they will hit the ground running in S2. So hopefully that's a good thing.

Yeah, the FLASH pilot succeeds at being VERY charming throughout, and actually is kind of like a brighter ARROW. ARROW - Brooding - dark sets = Flash.

Re: Big Bang Theory is it any good? I used to like it but stopped watching it a long time ago. Seemed to just be annoying more than funny and rehashing the same old jokes (Oh Sheldon doesn't understand the situation and has responded awkwardly without realising! And now Leonard and Penny has fallen out again! And now Raj and the Jewish one have made vaguely racist comments!)
