If you had to pick one? It's not easy to do.

GotM: Probably Paran
DG: I would say Duiker but the CoD storyline didn't really intertwine with the others. I say Felisin.
MoI: Whiskeyjack seemed to have the most musings.
HoC: The only certain one--Karsa.
MT: We know the north has more chapters than the south. I want to say Trull, but both Udinass and Seren Pedac seemed to have more screentime. I pick Udinass.
TBH: Haven't read it yet; I know I'm taking a risk by posting on this board.
NoK: Also haven't read yet.
Whole series: It's too early for me to say, but I see Karsa playing a huge role. Paran also seems like he could be major.

in MoI itkovian is also a strong candidate for a 'main character' thats the thing about these books though. there are like hundreds of main characters

I'm going with characters, plural

GotM: Paran and Crokus
DG: Duiker, Fiddler, Kalam
MoI: Toc, Gruntle, WJ, Paran
HoC: Karsa, Fiddler, Felisin the Younger
MT: Trull, udinass, Brys
TBH: Too many stories and none very specific
NoK: Temper and Kiska.

Rather then each book having a main character, it is more like each storyline has a main character, so for example for GotM Paran is the main character of the hunting-Sorry storyline, while Crokus is the main character of the Darujhistan storyline, etc. But even then it's very convoluded because you can seperate or combine storylines very easily.

(very tempted to exploit your posting this ahead of your reading and making some sort of statement about Karsa dying or something)

TBH: Rhulad. Almost everything in the book is about his rise and fall.

Otherwise, I agree with everything Apt said. Which is my usual stance.

If it's only one character, I reckon:

GotM: Paran
DhG: Felisin
MoI: Toc, despite not being in the main sotryline
HoC: Karsa
MT: Rhulad
tBh: Tavore
NoK: Temper

The best thing about the books, of course, is that they don't have one main character. I've been thinking about that list for ages, and I'm still not satisfied it. Apt's idea would be better, but I thought I'd try and get one for each anyway - I'm not convinced it can be done properly, which I consider to be a great thing :)

GotM: Paran
DhG: Duiker
MoI: Itkovian
HoC: Karsa
MT: Rhulad
TbH: (Toughest one) Leoman (just to be different)
RG: Trull
NoK: Temper

I tried to take a different viewpoint obviously :)

I would agree with you on the Karsa thing. Seems like he is the most major player in the entire series, with the exception of maybe Fiddler.

I think if you focus on central storylines that have future significance it makes it somewhat easier...

GotM - Paran of course
DG - Tough. I guess I'd have to go with Felisin because Duiker doesn't show up much in the future. Sucks because CoD story arc screams for recognition.
MoI - If it weren't for my idea earlier, I might even say Gruntle. Another tough one. But... I want to just simply say its the Bridgeburners as a whole. Cop out, I know.
HoC- Karsa
MT - Although Rhulad is at the core of the plot, I consider it more Trull's story. Shows his complete opposition to the new Edur way, sets up the Shorning, etc.
tBH - I like the Tavore idea. But I would have to say Fiddler.
RG - Karsa? Rhulad? Silchas Ruin? Trull? Tehol? Udinaas? Tavore? Quick Ben? Damn... can't do it. Leaning towards Trull, Udinaas, or Karsa.

I have problems isolating the characters to specific books, it is easier to isolate the major characters to a species/race.

God(dess): K'rul (elder), the shadow boys (newbies),
Wizards: QB (no kidding),
Ascendents: CG? That's how he's described in MoI
Assasins: Actually I'd go with Apsalar
Houseboys: Mael
The Old Gang: Laseen
T'lan Imas: hmmmm Tool?
Tiste Edur: Rhulad
Clean-shaven: Trull (and he has competition)
Drunk: Gruntle
Failed bodyguard: Karsa
Normal folk: Fiddler
Noble folk: Paran (G)
Psychologist: Kruppe
General: Paran (T)

and so on...

This is like describing tMbotF as "a fantasy story with giants". Technically accurate, but woefully inadequate.

I have amended your list slightly.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Obviously, the main character of the entire series is Richard Rahl, wielder of Truth, the raptor gazing lord of all he surveys, tortured but never broken.
Wait, sorry, these are GOOD books. My bad.
I personally think that GotM: Cutter and Paran and Lorn and Tattersail
DG: Duiker and Felisin Paran and Kalam and Mappo
MoI: QB and Toc and Gruntle
HoC: KARSA!!! WITNESS!!! and Kalam
MT: Trull, Tehol, Bugg, Brys and Seren
TBH: Bottle, Fiddler, Cutter and Mappo, Karsa
RG: Fiddler, Taralack Veed, Bugg, Tehol, Karsa

Meandering away from the thread's purpose...

It took me fifteen minutes to figure out 'tMbotF'. That's why I stick to 'Sudoku' for the most part. It was the 'b' that stopped me.

I have no problems with your description and I completely agree with it - that describes my original intention. In fact I think we should begin a thread on exactly that subject (for later). Get a name, give a description. Get a description, give a name. Must be technically accurate, but woefully inadequate.

At any rate, 99.999% of our group would put Karza in their top 3 mmf list. (How many list members are there anyway? Should I drop to 99.9?)

I would guess that 98% would rank him #1 (I would). They too are technically accurate, but equally inadequate. He is an extremely complex character; to consider him simply as a mmf diminishes every storyline he is involved in. The only book he doesn't dominate of those he inhabits is DG.

And it's why I didn't include mmf as a race/species in my list, though God knows there are enough of them to choose from, and enough threads discussing the options.

My dream conversation of the entire series would have Karsa vs Kruppe. Let's see how really complicated he could make the series. Maybe I should go looking for a thread...

Karsa as Karsa - that certainly qualifies as a species! Wish I had thought of it. I considered Leoman for the role of failed bodyguard, but I thought more people would be startled if I chose Karsa. The role of successful bodyguards (not included above) would be filled by those poor marines in MoI.

I'm assuming that you aren't using mmf in the group sex sense, but for the life of me I can't come up with what you actually mean.

My dream conversation consists of the following:
Kruppe
Tehol
Pust
Karsa

10 pages of conversation between Kruppe, Tehol, and Pust, while Karsa remains silent, listening. Then Karsa makes one statement that stuns those three into furiously thinking silence, and walks away.
