My favorite character is Jaime. I've just loved to watch him change these first 4 books. By that same token, I love to hate his sister.

She's one of the few characters that is pretty much one-sided. She's a baddy through and through. Even her motivations, which are intended to give her a more human side and partially justify her actions, fall flat. She is the most hateable person in the series, and I do so with gusto. Fun to read about, especially when things go badly for her. I love to see her get what's coming to her.

I rather liked how Cersei inadvertently opened up the can of religious worms that ended with her tossed in prison. She's an interesting character, who has managed to rise to power without actually having any of her own.

tyrion is a brilliant character, and i was thrilled to see he's on his way to Dany's realm. It's extremely interesting how much of FFC was spent sending people out specifically to advise, manipulate, seize or marry her. And that she's probably equal to any of them now.... played correctly, she could arrive in Westeros with a significant chunk of the kingdom already sworn to her.

Anyrate, aside from Chris Golden, RA Salvatore and Kevin Andersen routinely stabbing little GRRM voodoo dolls in the heart with beef ribs, i suspect George is good for a while and we'll see him finish the series.

Am I the only one who thinks Tyrion is incredibly overrated? He's not a bad character, but there's just too much of the 'persecuted genius' about him, he's too obviously GRRM's favourite.

Edit: Also, on the ridiculous GRRM health discussion - my grandma was about that size, had a heart condition and other problems, and was 80+ when she died last year. Honestly, him living to a ripe old age is not unlikely whatsoever.

Funny you should say that. That was a thematic element GRRM was keen to explore and rather regrets that the split means it won't work the way it was supposed to.

The 'old Reek' is now very dead. Ramsay has anointed Theon as the 'new Reek' after sticking him in the dungeons of the Dreadfort and leaving him to subsist on rats for months. I've read the first Theon chapter - it's in Bantam's Pulse magazine - and it's pretty disturbing stuff.

I think the thing about Tyrion is the fact that he so bloody evil, but he wraps it all up inside his outward appearance that no one quite knows or thinks..."for gods sakes watch out for the bloody dwarf!"

I also find him slightly overrated and I am also convinced he is a Martin favourite.

Actually, its quite the opposite. He got the shaft his whole life, getting screwed over by his family. Everybody always assumed he was evil and treacherous precisely becasue he was a dwarf. Even so he defended King's Landing brilliantly until he was betrayed and nearly killed. When he wakes up with half his face missing, no one even gives him credit for his successful tactics, let alone a word of "thanks.

So he hits the breaking point and shoots his father on the crapper. Can't say I blame him. And its one of the most bitchin' scenes in all the books.

tyrion is a great character. i hope he gets his revenge. affc was pants though. on rereading the series though i don't think its as great as i thought. its good but when i read it first it was the defining work of its era, a massive heaving world with a dense population beyond the usual scope of traditional fantasy. excellent world building. i don't think his productivity or lack of it affected the quality of the series it pales now simply because people like erikson and bakker have raised the bar. where in erikson/s writing would you find a character like sansa upset at her conclusion that some knights are evil and not chivalrous! gasp. donaldson is still the only writer really to stand up against erikson and potentially bakker.
