CUSSERS, MOTHERF--CKERS! (SPOILER ALERT)

because they were really the heroes of the book. It was like modern-day marines with machine guns and RPGs vs stone age opponents. Seriously, I wanted to get behind the Malazans as the "underdogs" but they so overpowered any foes that I was actually rooting against them, just because there was absolutely no possibility of them losing. Outnumbered 20-1? CUSSERS! Demon princes attacking? CUSSERS! God-dragons coming at you? CUSSERS, MOTHERF--CKERS! It got really silly when Silchas Ruin, who I thought was pretty bad ass, got blown out of the air with 2 shots from a friggin' crossbow...you'd think a god-dragon wouldn't just fall to shreds quite so easily. I think I'd enjoy all the books more without the all-powerful Moranth munitions which no other army seems to have (no other army seems to have competent soldiers or leaders either) but this book really annoyed me in this respect (can you tell?).

well
a) the munitions were limited--we were only shown 3-4 squads out of.... what, 50?
not all marines made it out

:D the crossbows used to fire cussers are freaking HUGE--they're bout teh size of the longbow, afaik

c) there was a lot more going on than just the Malaz invasion storyline that made this a great book

I'm personally waiting for the battles once they run out of cussers.

Of course, this will be after they stick them all in Mappo's sack of holding and get Spite to drop it on the Crippled God. Not for any real strategic reason, just to hear him blow up.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

I'm not attacking the book as a whole, just that aspect...after I finished it up the munition situation just really got under my skin, and I needed to vent. I was a Silchas fan, as well as Trull...reading about Ruin getting swatted like a fly by one little marine and those damn cussers (Quick just finished him off), then Trull getting ganked just fouled my overall impression of the book. Hell, I've never turned pages on any series of books like I have on this one. This is the first sour impression I've had after finishing a Malazan book, which makes it all the worse...it's probably good that I'll have to take a break before the release of the next novel, as I think I may have burned myself out. Rake is really my favorite character so I'll be ready to dive back in when it comes out, later this year I believe?

yes, this summer (june/August) for UK/Canada.

the Ruin situation was supposed to demonstrate that no powerhouse is unbeatable in this world
As for Trull... well... SE loves his tragedy--WJ, Pearl, Trull, Toc....the list could go on...

Great rant, I laughed :D

I liked the way the use of Malazan Munitions was shown to let them completely run over oponents not prepared for such tactics.

That was what helped them win Genebackis and retake 7Cs during the first? rebellion. They changed the face of war, suddenly size of force isn't going to determine the outcome of a battle. Likewise hidding in your big fortress cities won't help you because the malazans will simply blow your walls down.

I didn't like how easy Ruin was sent on the run either. When Icccy failed to deliver the pwnage of Lether that I wanted, I hoped Ruin would set the city on fire. But you have to remember that Moranth munitions kill magic, so what ever natural protection dragons possess is useless against the Malazans. Still, Ruin taking two cussers and still being alive, then taking the same beating that Quick gave the sisters... AND STILL BEING ABLE TO FLY , well, that's pretty damn impressive.

Yeah as we've seen, Soletaken Tiste are not easy to kill.

Apt's right though. RG was a perfect example of how when two cultures that have no experience with one another clash, there's usually a distinct loser and distinct loser due to an advantage of technology or tactic of warfare.

(See American Indians versus the Europeans)

By the way, the title for RG should've been

What the Fuck Can Go Wrong Now? A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen

titles:

Midnight Tides 2 A tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen

The Bonehunters go to Lether A Malazan Book of the Fallen

Letters to Iwo Lether---

I like the cussers (yes it gives them an easy way out of most situations) but it shows that mortals (with science) can dominate be just as destructive as any god.

I guess it was the only real plan they had. The original plan of gaining allies as they headed towards Letharis was a brilliant idea. They wouldn't have had to use cussers as much if they had built up a strong local resistance. It was their last option you can tell that all the soldiers are worried about using up so many munitions. Their next engagement will now probably have to be done in the classical style which is what I'm looking forward to as I can't think of may other places where there is going to be huge battles (maybe 7c if the Wickan wars start and obviously Assail)

On the contrary, I believe there is one unbeatable powerhouse in the Malazan world, and that would be any sapper holding a...I'm not even going to say it.

Silchas was I think beaten down by cussers and by Quick Ben, after a re-read.

One cusser knocked him off balance, Quick Ben battered him with a wave of magic in the same manner he battered Menandore, Sheltatha and Sukul, then another cusser just pushed the point home.

I LOVE the cussers! I mean, how many fantsay books can you pick up and expect to read about explosives? Besides, MM's make some of our favourite characters what they are. Fid, Cuttle, Hedge, the whole of the Bonehunters lol. I just wish the Moranth would invent some new ones. That'd be cool. Like, say, pitters- they compress earth and thrust it downward, creating a pit. Pretty good, huh? It could be shaped like a coil.

Reaper's gale was a weird title, because all the other books have had something to do with the title. They should have named it Chains of Torment, or something to do with Rhulad. Or, as a funny one, Fiddler and the Fourteen Y'Ghataneers go to Lether.

I loved the title. Thought it fit perfectly with all the death in the book. :D

Made me think of Hood and Icarium when I first saw that was going to be the title.

"Reapers gale" I thought it was in referance to hedge talking to the wind, which I also thought is where they get hood's breath from until I heard toc's explanation
