who is Fiddler

I too wondered what hidden potential Fiddler possessed. Right now I'm looking at him like a Jack Burton type character - an ordinary guy in extraordinary situations.

I think Fiddler is simply most of the things mentioned. He's good at his job through experience and instinct. He has some sorcerous ability due to natural affinity and proximity to some powerful mages and events throughout his life. He's somewhat cursed and damned lucky.
That's not to say, however, that just because he's not something extraordinary now (god, mage, Soletaken, etc.) doesn't mean he won't become something like that later on. Even if he dies, you know he won't go away.
Out of the scads of characters in these novels, Fiddler has been my favorite from the start. He reminds me of someone I know....

Fiddler is the type of person that people will start to worship. An army of insane sappers with cussers on crossbows worshipping Fiddler the Sapper God, King of High House Boom.

i've got this feeling that by the end of the series fid and geslers squads are gonna be the deadliest small fighting force in the known world

it helps that geslers squad is full of damn near ascendents from the fire bath they went through(or whatever it was)

well that's only gesler and stormy, at this point. That leaves just about every grunt/corporal in the squad as "normal" people.

He lost Sands and Uru Hela so all he has left is Shortnose, Mayfly, Flashwit and Stormy.

I think maybe Paladin's referring to the "firebath" of Y'Ghatan, actually.
...?

Yeah, they went through (presumably) Kurald Thyrllan while on the Silanda. Gesler, Stormy, and Truth got the bronzed-skin near-ascendancy, as did Baudin. But Kulp, Heboric, and Felisin didn't seem to (IIRC.) Maybe they fell off the ship early enough that they didn't get KT'ed?

Kulp, Baudin, Truth, Gesler and Stormy were all affected. Heboric was protected from his tatoos and/or being inside the cabin at the beginning, plus he was the first over the rail. Felisin was not affected because Baudin shielded her.

wasn't there some mention of Fiddler being a mason like Whiskeyjack?
only he was real crap at being a mason.....
which leads me to think that WJ might be the mason for high house of death, due to hoods involvement of his life/death
[a speculation that probably already has been voiced no doubt, but still]
But the idea of fid being the soldier of high house life does seem like an interesting concept, and along those lines do you think Leoman might become champion for high house of life then too? - oh sure lots of reasons why he wouldn't be good for the job, but in the interest in plot twisting it could happen.

Fid being a crap mason typifies today's generation (yes, you too, Apt)- willing to blow stuff up and not create.
