Spoiler
This spoiler tells a bit of Fiddler career as we learn in RG
I don't really see a need for spoilering the above, while it's a comment from RG, it's not a spoiler just an opinion one of the characters have.
I don't like the idea that Fiddler is supposedly the last great sapper. I think it's nonsense. There's bound to be hundreds of expert sappers around in the empire. The lucky ones who learned the tricks before they blew themeselves to bits. While Fiddler may have developed some tricks, do you really believe no other sapper out there learned to improvise and developed lethal new tactics? unlikely. It's merely Crumbles reverent adoration.
In RG when Fid is setting up those munitions for the trailing Edur, whichever sapper was with him was AMAZED watching him work and thinning the wax on the cussers and also that he was witnessing this manuever in person. (forgive my memory, haven't read it in a few months.) It seems that Fiddler IS that good, that he is truly that great as a sapper. Will there be others? I'm sure there will be other great sappers, but Fiddler is the original innovator and a living legend. Considering the losses the Malazan Military had taken between Genebackis and Y'Ghatan (can't spell them, sorry) I'd say he probably is the last great sapper. Others may develop, but he's been tested and he hasnt failed yet.
