Karsa has been called both Knight and Mortal Swordof the CG and even Dassem Ultor has been called both Knight and Mortal Sword of Hood so I don't think they're so much different things.

Are you sure Karsa was called Mortal Sword? Because I'm pretty sure Rhulad had that position the past decade.

In HoC when Karsa meets the Unbound he says something about having been chosen as Knight of HHoC, Mortal Sword of the CG and the Unbound agree with him

But wasnt that because the plan was for him to come kill Rhulad and take the sword?

Hmm... strange, since in the same book the spirits on Drift Avalii mention a Mortal Sword of a Thousand deaths, which is clearly Rhulad... at least I thought it was Rhulad.

Maybe could refer to the thousand souls dragged in Karsa's wake? Just a suggestion,

I just remember it clearly sounding like it was Rhulad.

When I we were discussing about Knights and Mortal Swords being the same I made two examples: Karsa and Dassem Ultor. You are all talking of Karsa but what about Dassem

Oh no Im not disagreeing with you, I thought it meant Rhulad too, just trying to think of possibilities.

My thought is that the CG and unbound were trying to manipulate Karsa into taking the sword from Rhulad eventually, as Rhulad didnt seem to have the capacity for it, sooner or later he was gonna have a complete mental breakdown and be unable to do anything but lie there gibbering, at which point someone woulda Brys-d him.

No. Apsalar is thinkng about Dassem and this is her thought: Dassem was Hood's Mortal Sword etc etc.
So, you see?

yes, please do
While I remeber an MoI quote of QB, after his first encounter with the Grey Swords, where he tries to explain "Mortal Sword" as the old term-equivalent of "Knight", the situation seems more convoluted than that.
Knight is a Deck position--it is institutionalized through the Deck (and thus, the Azath)
Mortal sword is position associated with a god, establishing a link between a deity and its followers, bypassing the "deity--power it serves/is aspected to" relationship that is necessary in the previous condition.

Actually he would be entitled to it since Rake turned his back on his mother. Clip is looking to take the place of a man he views as a betrayer of Mother Dark and the Andii.

I don't think Clip picked up Rakes son and grandchildren because he's planning a nice warm family reunion. Most likely he's looking to turn them against Rake or using them as some kind of leverage.

Apparently Nimander is getting a big role in the next book, so it's interesting to see how that pans out.

provided he can get over his dead gf, I could see it happening. He's supposed to be the leader of the surviving Drift Avail Andii. It's possible that he may start acting like it.

Phaed wasn't his girlfriend she was either his sister or his daughter... I can't remember which.

I hope he gets his act together aswell. I did not enjoy reading his POVs in RG mainly because he was so emo.

It will be interesting find if he's a drconean soletaken aswell.
