I wasn't talking about Phaed
When we're first introduced to him in RG, he's thinking back to his dead gf/lover, who was a mage and was killed by the Edur on Drift Avail... and hopw she told him to be strong/be a leader, etc...

Ah I found the quote even if it is a bit late:
The Bonehunters Bantam editon trade paperback pag.641
Now what do you say?

Quote
...Dassem Ultor had been Hood's Mortal Sword-in reality if not in name...
Now what do you say?
Adept of Team Quick Ben
I greet you as guests and so will not crush the life from you and devour your soul with peals of laughter. No, instead, I will make tea-Gothos

Basically Dassem was part of Hood's religion and part of the Pantheon as Knight of High House Death. His Mortal Sword status means he was one hell of a warrior, as we know, and that there was likely not another Mortal Sword of Hood in existance. It also shows his involvement in the religion/cult and Hood's support.
Mortal Sword is defined as: a martial champion to a god (BH Glossary).

So, can a knight of a house led by a God, be that god's MS?
Also, MS must derive power from a God--in MoI, Brukhalian's sword was clearly special, I suspect that Fener himself blessed it or something.
Can Clip claim the MS status from Rake without having any tangible connection to Rake?

That's a good question. Feather Witch's thread in RG is centered on the idea that worshippers can compel their gods, make them do things they don't want to do.
Could the Bluerose Andii, through virtue of worshipping Rake, force him to anoint Clip as MS? I'd say so.

Rake isn't a God. He's worshipped as one but he denies it utterly.

Well, once again, FW had a TANGIBLE connection to the Errant--she ate his eye
I think that this type of connection is pre-requisite for getting somehting from a god.

Which I think counts for a lot- Iccy's worshipped as a God too, but he displays no knowledge of it and does not consider him a God, and while he may be crazy powerful, I wouldnt say he's been God-like at any point.
Anyone else think Iccy would have made a better God of Tragedy than Dessembrae?

Heboric and Fener, maybe? The hands would be your connection there.

I was referring to Clip--he has no ties to Rake, yet wishes Rake to be his God.

Sorry, I meant that Heboric and Fener would help your case. I changed sides

Don't think in absolutes - there is no no NO hard and fast rule about any of this.
Karsa may be the HoC's Knight AND the CG's Mortal Sword; Heboric was never Fener's Destriant but he was sufficiently linked to conduct the jade power straight to the god; the Grey Swords more or less arbitrarily assigned SA and Destriant roles when they pledged to Togg and Fancytail, and it wasn't like the Wolves said anything about it - hell, at that point the sum total of Togg worship the Swords had engaged in was 'crap - we need a new god. how about those two furry thingies?'; Hood recruited Baudin post deep fry and Trake recruited Heboric mid-nap and Gruntle mid-battle, but FW recruited the Errant (i eat your eye, so i'm your high priestess, sucka!), and Udinaas refused to be recruited; and Heboric posthumously switched from Destriant to Shield Anvil. Drek is basically inhabiting Bana's body (tapeworm god!), but we haven't seen any ref to Bana, priest tho he is, being Destriant.
Clip lies, probably a lot. And it's alleged he was 'born in Darkness', so his link to Rake, if any, may be: a lie; something Mommy D did; a blood-link, since they have the same mom; something the Bluerose Andii worhipped into happening without Rake's involvement... and Rake's not King of HHD, he's Knight - so you have an Acsendant, who is worshipped as a god but doesn't claim to be one, taking on the position that, in HH Shadow, Death and Chains, is occupied by someone who is sworn to a god but not a god themselves.
And then there's Dassem, who was Knight to a God, but became a God....
My point being, you can't apply one situation to explain another. It's only the general interaction between mortals and immortals that's the common element. There are no pre-req's, there are no 'rules', there are no sure-fire methods.
