It suddenly struck me that we're sorely lacking a thread praising this series.

I don't know why but pretty much ever since it was first aired in Denmark, I've been hooked. It emerged around the same time the CSI series was gaining popularity, but this kicks CSI's ass in every category.

I liked JAG, and even though it was good, this is a case were the spin-off is sooo much better. The stories are intelligent, the quality of the production is high, the dialogue is funny and relaxed and the chemistry between the characters is phenomenal.

I challenge you to find a series that is as all around great as this, in fact I'd nominate it as one of the best series of the decade.

Apt, win rep. I love NCIS. It's a trashy CIS rip-off, for sure, but so damn good. The characters are what make it great, they all have such awesome quirks :(

You never saw Homicide Life on the Streets then ! 1993-1999.

Considered by critics to be one of television's most authentic police dramas, as well as an excellent dramatic series propelled by a talented ensemble cast, Homicide garnered three straight Television Critic's Awards for outstanding drama from 1996 to 1998 and was the first drama ever to win three of the prestigious Peabody Awards for best drama (1993, 1995, 1997).

Really? I've never even given it a shot; isn't it just a CSI set in the Navy? Is there really that much crime in the Navy? I'm clueless about this show.

High-powered military style crime :( Well, and also general run of the mill crime that happens to somehow involve a sailor.

I hate all CBS programming with the exception of Everybody Loves Raymond. CBS is just pure crap and thus, NCIS or whatever is turds.

I'm just waiting for CSI: JUPITER!

I don't know about NCIS I've never really watched it but CSI:Miami is on right now and it is the most cobbled together stupid shit that has ever burned my eyeballs. I mean really come on nobody is as good as these folks are supposed to be otherwise every single murder would be solved.

For straight up police work and dialogue mixed with the court room stuff the best series ever was the original Law and Order.

Agreed, LM. Law and Order is compelling. All those CSI shows are just annoying. It's like wannabe Sexy thriller meets boring, bad actors :(

Man I really hate CBS.

That's cause police work doesn't really change, it pretty much comes down to asking questions. Plus since when do crime lab folks run around doing the actual footwork?

Although I will admit I have an unholy desire for the Gothy girl on NCIS.

I agree with your opinion of the other CSI programs, the amount of knowledge they have, and the tasks each CSI is able to complete, would take a masters degree in 8 seperate subjects and the world championship in Trivial Pursuit.

But NCIS stays away from the science detective idea. Gibs, DiNozo and Ziva are just normal detectives with their own strengths. McGee is more of a wizz but that's mostly with computers. The lab work and autopsy stuff is left to Ducky and Abby.

While in reality Ducky and Abby would have a ton of other cases to process, there is the hint that they work on other projects besides the immediate case.

The cool thing about NCIS is that, like JAG and Harmon, the team get involved in ridiculous assignments way out of their field, espionage, infiltration, bodyguard for officials, etc. etc.

the most ridiculous thing with CSI is not their insane knowledge of everything, but the incredibly sophisticated, AI like tek they're all playing with. They have a 2d model of sound from a phone conversation, hit perhaps three keys on the keyboard, and voila, they have a 3d model that compares every single peak to all other sound waves known to man, shows the comparison to you in fancy colours and makes you a cup of tea. Or they have an image. They hit perhaps two buttons, and suddenly they have to images, from a few seconds later, everything is compared, the geometry is calulated and they see that a shadow has moved and must now be in Huston.

Not to mention that they have like three floors in a high price building, with lot of space, glass, offices and flat screens. In real life they have a couple of rooms in the basement, with mould on the walls and one computer from the last century puttering in the corner next to the coffee machine.

Anyways, I think NCIS is dull..
Take good care to keep relations civil
It's decent in the first of gentlemen

Dull?! Get the fuck out of here. What crime series are you watching that are more exciting?

Besides, NCIS doesn't use the same flashy idiot tricks that CSI uses. Not to the same extent anyway, it's more detective and cop work, than flashy diagrams.

And shooting, lots of shooting and things getting blown up :(
