Apologies if this has been asked before but i did try searching and didn't see this being asked anywhere.

A thought thats been bugging me lately ive just finished re reading HoC and now ive started MT again reading through the prologue Osserc is mentioned as being an Elder God..

An Elder God, come in answer to the violent rift torn between the realms. As expected. Still...which god? K'rul? Draconus? The Sister of Cold Nights? Osserc? Kilmandaros? Sechul Lath?

Now i hope im not going to get flamed for being a noob but i thought Osserc was the Tiste Liosan 'god' a son of Mother Dark not an Elder God?

Osserc did seem to get lumped in with the Elder Gods back in the earlier books, when his name was just a gate in Darujhistan. Given what we've learned since, I would put him on a similar status as Rake (i.e. old but not an EG), with the exception that Osserc accepts the worship of his race. It's not totally clear though.

I'm not sure why you are asking which Elder God comes in response to the events of the MT prologue - you are told right then and there that it's Mael.

I wasn't asking which god appeared in the prologue, if it came accross that thats what i was asking then i didn't mean for it to come out that way, i was asking why Osserc was referred to as an Elder god by the Jaghut whereas he is known to us typically as the Tiste Liosan god... a child of Mother Dark.

Although you said he accepts the worship of his race im not sure thats true in HoC when hes with L'oric im sure theres a passage when L'oric asking why he doesnt come back and save his people Osserc says something along the lines of i cba.. dont have the book to hand at the moment though.

Elder Gods is just the name given to pantheon of Gods. Ossrec, K'Rul, Draconus, Mael, etc. Are Gods from a different time period, no longer widely worshiped. The current pantheon of Gods would be Hood, Fener, Queen of Dreams, etc. thus not Elder Gods. Once you read Bonehunters you will be able to better understand what K'Rul, Draconus and some of the other Elder Gods really are. Osric just gets lumped in with them because he was worshiped by the beings of the world along with the others.

Fair enough, now that I read it again I see you were quoting Gothos asking that question of himself, not actually asking us. If you want to put something in quotes, put this before: [$Quote] and this after: [/$Quote] without the $ signs.

The difference is obvious enough. Osric accepts that he is a god to the Liosan, and accepts their worship. He just doesn't really care or do anything with it. Rake actively rejects that role, and mocks those who would be his flock. Osric is a disinterested god, but still a god where Rake is not.

I agree with Dolorous Menhir - Osserc and Rake are on the same/similar level. The quote from the prologue is a bit confusing though. Similar logic would imply that Rake is also "Elder" except he rejects his worshippers.

Yes, Elder in Malaz doesn't seem to have any meaning beyond old, unlike other series where 'Elder' or 'Ancient' is synonymous with 'poerful' or more often 'overpowered.
