So i know Moby was the Familiar of Mammot (Crokus' Uncle in GOTM) but what i want to know is this: Is he the large black Demon on pg181 when Sormo E'nath conjures a ritual showing the D'ivers/soletaken on "The Path of Hands"? And if it is Moby what is the signifigance?

Moby dissapeared at one point when Fid/Crokus/apsalar leave Ehrlitan - which later gets explained by a throw off comment about the mating games of Boh'karala, but clearly he's more than this right? I saw it mentioned elsewhere that he's more than just a familiar - and the Demon we see in the conjuring cant be Apt as it has no "large black arms".

Anyone any ideas or was it just another Demon on the Path?

I don't remember that scene well, but maybe the demon was summoned by one of the soletaken? We know that Gryllan at least, was a strong magic user.

EDIT: It would be cool if the demon was Moby, but know that I'm trying to remember. Wasn't that demon ripped to pieces by the surrounding soletaken and d'ivers?

I think it was mentioned that Moby (who is a demon) was protecting them while they were on the path... so there is a good chance that it was him... unless like Apt said he got killed, in which case it was not cuz Moby doesnt die....

Was the Aptorian there at the time? I remember him being mentioned at the very beginning of the book. Otherwise I'd say it was probably Moby.

The Aptorian was near Kalam during his adventure.

The attack on Sormo and Duiker, etc took place along way from Crokus and co, so I don't think it was protecting anyone...

I no longer think the demon is Moby... I'll check DG on sunday if no one else comes up with quote before then.

I always just assumed that Baruk sent Moby with the Trygalle Traders to protect Crokus and co.. But that could just be a stupid assumption I thought up a long time ago for no good reason...

We lose track of Moby for a long time until he catches up with them at Tremorlor. The demon in the Sormo encounter was still upright "but could not last" It never says he falls. He is warning them of other D'ivers. Being helpful when everything else was attacking seems moby-ish. Who's to say that moby isn't following the D'ivers along the path of hands to Tremorlor where he is supposed to take up guardianship. This would suggest he knew that the path was a fake or had some outward guidance; the Azath possibly. Since Shadowthrone has the plan to dump off the D'ivers on the house maybe the Azath found a suitable defender and sent it along the path to kill what it could on the way? There isn't enough evidence to say yes but there is the possibility.

Im thinking i agree with Stonecrow - i know it wasn't apt because of the physicality of the Demon in the scene. Antway im enjoying this 2nd re-read as much as i did the first time i read the books, definitely a series of books to last a lifetime!

Though it describes the demon as being different that Moby (or so I seem to recall), wouldn't it be possible that Moby was altering his form most of the time, to stay incognito? I seem to remember Ostric's (Much later, sorry) demon altering it's form.

L'oric's demon, Greyfrog (which I think is what you're referring to weaverbird), didnt really change his appearance, he just sort of shed his outer layer when he was attacked. If you'll recall he looked exactly the same afterwards but with two smaller, new looking limbs where the old ones had been hacked off.

I almost finished the 2nd book now. I am wondering, does moby appear in the future books? or only in deadhouse gates?

We haven't seen Tremolor since DG, so he hasn't appeared yet, but he may show up in TtH.

I'm fairly confident you're referring to the ape in a cage there, Blewin, and how it inspired Bottle's empathy with animals. He imagines it ended up happy in the care of a wealthy mage somewhere. Nowt to do with Moby Im afraid.
