I' m sorry to say that the only time Trull is really described fighting(the Ceda killing is a murder not a fight) is with the Jeck but as he was using a sword against those little creepy Soletaken I can' t give judgement. On the other hand as he choose a spear as his favourite weapon he surely can 't be an amateur.

Doesn't seem to be much of a hindrance to Trull, in a duel or otherwise. He's just a living nightmare when fighting with a spear. But I wouldn't rank him over Brys Beddict though. Even Trull came to the conclusion that he'd most likely lose in a confrontation with Brys. But concerning only spear men, Trull is most definitively their superior. If the Malazan Empire had a falanx of Trulls, hehe, no manner of Ascendants would stand a chance in combat against it. Sorcery is another matter.

I just finished MT for the first time and am going through these threads. I just wanted to say that Trull did not say Brys would beat him; it was Fear who said that.

Also, I got the initial impression that Trull's prowess came from somewhere else, as if he had somehow ascended in the icelands. I was waiting for an explanation but it never came. Trull himself couldn't believe that he was killing all those Jheck, but that it must have been a dream.

In conclusion, I don't see how Trull went from standing in his brother's shadow at the beginning of MT to being a superhuman (or superEdur) badass.

I took it as a further sign of his modesty. We already know he''s humble, which is confirmed later, he probably possessed the spear skills all along but shrugged it off. After all, he would never really have got to use them before, as he would have just been sparring with friends etc in his village.

Trull and Fear were almost equal right?
Anyway Trull didn't think a man could do what Brys did with his sword so I dont think they are even close .But that's just me-I think Brys is as good as Dassem in terms of pure skill.Anyway Trull would kill Rhulad for a number of times but in the end...
Spoiler

PS:I've seen some posts saying "don't underestimate Karsa" .Guys, we don't underestimate Karsa,we just don't like him :D

Midnight Tides had 2 names that were modest -- Trull and Brys -- who whom the speak a little and do a lot maxims wells. The latter's takedown of Rhulad was almost offhand casual. Trull's spear fighting was seldom used, but when seen was above and beyond even Fear's, who taught him, and actually admitted a confrontation would last should with him.
If there were no smart people others wouldn't feel inadequate.

Right?

Ok I'm totally starting a Trull Vs Brys thread in the RG forum since everyone seems to be in agreement that Trull would wipe the floor with Rhulad until Rhulad resurrected 23498234897 times.

Interesting thought. I think you're right, to an extent. It was, after all, acknowledged that a clash between Icarium and Rhulad would end life as everyone knew it because Rhulad would never die and Icarium would never lose, at least not for a very, very long time.
Spoiler
. So it's a safe bet to place Trull on the high end of warriors in Erikson's novels. I'd have to say, however, that Trull would defeat Brys. Brys is a gifted warrior, and is also high up, but I do not think he has the reputed backing Trull did.
Spoiler

Might be a bit late for this thread, but I'm nearly finished with my MT-reread, and actually, we see Trull fight with his spear at least thrice during MT, and that not mentioning his fight against the Jheck which was with Trull using a sword [although he does use his spear briefly but it breaks].
First, there's Trull killing Letherii during a battle. Beforehand Ahlrada Ahn remarks that it's going to be a duel-like fight, face to face, implying that the spear will be inappropriate, but Trull just shruggs this off and readies his spear. There are several occasions where Trull or other make remarks about his skills as a spearwielder and Trull is quite aware of his own skills, at least compared to other Edur [he refuses to duel pre-death Rhulad 'cause Rhulad is waaay under Trull's abilities; he kills one of the Letherii harvesting the seals and calls his spear 'my iron-hafted slayed of foes']. Actually, I got the impression of Trull being sometimes quite snobby when he is in bad mood.
Then there's the fight with the FA, Serenity, where Trull attacks with his spear, actually reaches Serenity but the FA breaks the first spear. Trull is fast enough to escape one of Serenity's attacks, btw. The second spear, thrown by Trull, catches the FA and punches through. Not that bad, huh? But the fight reveals, imo, that a spearwielder has to carry around more than one spear [like we seen Trull do on several occasions], while a swordfighter needs only one sword, usually.
The third occasion Trull fights with his spear is when he loses his temper about Canarth's [random Edur sergeant in Trull's company] unceasing insults aimed at Trull and later Ahlrada [whom Trull admires as a warrior] and beats Canarth up nice and quick in a duel [!]. Although Canarth is probably not one of the best Edur warriors he barely manages to start fighting while Trull already has him down on his ass and on purpose injures Canarth just enough to show his own control of the fight.
Especially at the third occasion its said that the witnessing warriors barely could see Trull's attack [quote: "The other warriors were shouting, expressing disbelief with Trull's speed, with the stunning, deceptive simplicity of the attack."]

Of course, these are all comparisons to other Edur, but to come to the point, I think Trull could have easily owned Rhulad throughout MT, pre-death or after death, because he knew that Rhulad's fighting after his first death wasn't his own skill. This thought just didn't come to his mind, with Rhulad being his youngest brother, after all, and additional he was bound by the traditions of the Edur and their way of thinking. I may be wrong, but Trull is still thinking in the ways of the Edur, but he's thinking his own thoughts. Dunno how to say this. In any case, whether he realizes it or not, he's bound by the Edur's traditions and way of thinking, may he be more intelligent than average or whatever.

Among the Edur, I didn't get the impression of Trull being too modest, it's only compared to not-Edur that he becomes uncertain due to lack of comparison, I think, thus becoming more modest due to his overall personality. But I'd say he's at least one of the best spearwielders, if not the best. He would manage to fight against opponents with different weapons with his spear, but can't think of how it would end with Trull not using his beloved spear.

Just going to point out..I've landed on five different threads (including this one) where the portal was Reapers Gale, but rerouted back to Midnight Tides...moved? Some other people found this in this thread as well...hard to avoid spoilers at that point if a thread is moving Backwards.

I don't think he would have too much trouble with Rhulad besides the fact that he would be fighting his brother, Trull is a little sensitive. I say he is one of the best fighters hands down.

'Aye.' It's a good word. I think. More a whole attitude than a word, really. With lots of meaning in it, too. A bit of 'yes' and a bit of 'well fuck' and maybe some 'we're all in this together.' So a word to some up the Malazans. <Sunrise>

Note also that the family of Sengaris definitely perhaps a "step" above the other Edur.

Trull is insane, and his brother Binadas is almost second to the Warlock King in magery...a powerful family.

I do like the theory postulated that in the Ice wastes, Trull "found" or grew in some strange fashion to a more powerful warrior.

He is also a specialist with the spear, like Fiddler and his munitions, he has a highly singular weapon expertise.

Trull's my main Edur but Rhulad comes back from the dead, how can you face that(unless your Brys level O' awsomeness). Trull can hold his own against anyone if you put a spear in his hands but he's going to tier while Rhulad comes back not only rejuvanated but stronger each time. If that weren't enough one needs to consider Rhulad having the CG looking over his shoulder while Trull...well I won't spoil anything but Rhulad would win.
The world needs hypocrites...unfortunate but true.

So, wait... you're saying that because Brys is able to cut a helpless person lying on the ground to pieces, he is then a better fighter that Trull? Oh, well, that makes perfect sense.

And what does the CG protecting Rhulad have to do with whether Brys or Trull is the better fighter?

I think he's discussing a ho'd win between Rhulad and Trull, Apt. I think it's a pointless discussion really. However, Trull has shown himself time and again to be a peerless spear wielder. It wouldn't surprise me to see him get a one-up on Brys, should that never happen.
