Apparently, there are many ways...
That we know of: Ritual, failed or otherwise. Gift from a god. Tlan clan selection. Combined efforts of various mystics. Drink dragon blood. Sheboing Tiam. Be born by a shapeshifter.

But did the Beast Ritual really fail? Strikes me that maybe Dessimbelackis is still around...
Ah, but Krul aint just any God, hes the maker of modern magic, aint he?
It just strikes me as strange, because somewhere its mentioned that Soletaken can only be "created"... Its an odd choice of wording

Two different things.
The Shapeshifter ritual turned large hcunks of the FE into mad crazy shapeshifters, requriing the Imass to come in a kill most of them. I call that failure.
Dessmbewaky's part in it is unclear - theories run from he's now the Hounds to he's dead to he's Elvis. But since he's not running around all ascended and immortal demanding that people worship him, i figure whatever he did didn't work.

Yes, but we don't know that he's the only one who can make soletaken. He was even at low power when he made Buke go birdy.

I think the exact quote from Heboric or Kulp in DG is that they are 'born', but i think it's subjective given how many ways we noted earlier in the thread.

But wasnt the Beast Ritual supposed to make loads of mental shapeshifters? Wasnt that Dessimbelackis's kinda thing? He did like shapeshifters seemingly!

No. According to DG it was supposed to assist large chunks of the FE in ascending. They didn't plan on all of them going bugnuts and eating their friends and family.

The FE prefered to veer than ascend, apparantly it was "older"... So whats to say it didnt succeed just with unfortunate side effects lol. I reckon ppl thought they were string willed enough to not go mad...
