what's with Scientology, i mean, it's made by a sci fi writer. I mean come on, is L. Ron Hubbard really in some ship somewhere, flying arround the galacy? and is Tom Cruse really your messah, is he? i just don't get it. then they hae somekind of secret compound somewhere in the mojave desert somewhere. then there something about aliens in volcanos and spirits, and a evil emperor, how can these people not see this! I don't know, but if anyone could possibly try and make sense of this for me, they would me greatly thanked.

Hubbard was reported to have said something along the lines of "Being a science fiction writer won't make you rich. If you want to be rich, start a religion."

This is the one with the noodly appendages, right?
Hail Xenu!!
Incidentally, I don't think Hubbard deified himself, and neither is Cruise an official figure, he's just the most vocal crazy;)

Yeah, this isn't right what-so-ever.
Cruise is most likely 2nd in command of Scientology, and well never admitted by the "church" it's a generally accepted idea. I'll see if I can hunt up the relevant articles.

Hah, Scientology.
I live out here in the heart of that crazy shit...and there are a lot of nut jobs running around here in California that will try to convert you.
They are very secretive about it though...Cruise is an anomaly in that aspect. I never really cared for him before he went nuts...but he actually stayed at my hotel one time. Nut case.
And he is really, really short.

heh... I enjoyed several of his earlier movies. That's all I can say about him.
about Scientology--it's amoney-making scheme. A sci-fi author came up with it, so it must be good..

Cruise has been a scientologist since the 80's, it's just his craziness that is new.

I think you have to give all your money to the Scientologists before their creed makes sense.

Hypnotic positive suggestion. Actually Hubbard is smart, he realised that the part of religion that enables it to be spread is that at it's core. Most religions utilise the mass-hysteria approach but one-on-one works too.
wikipedia said:
The Anderson Report, an inquiry conducted in 1965 for the state of Victoria, Australia, found that the auditing process involved "command" hypnosis, in which the hypnotist assumes "positive authoritative control" over the patient. "It is the firm conclusion of this Board that most scientology and dianetics techniques are those of authoritative hypnosis and as such are dangerous. . . . The scientific evidence which the Board heard from several expert witnesses of the highest repute … which was virtually unchallenged—leads to the inescapable conclusion that it is only in name that there is any difference between authoritative hypnosis and most of the techniques of scientology. Many scientology techniques are in fact hypnotic techniques, and Hubbard has not changed their nature by changing their names."[183] Hubbard was an accomplished hypnotist, and close acquaintances such as Forrest Ackerman (Hubbard's literary agent) and A. E. van Vogt (an important early supporter of Dianetics) witnessed repeated demonstrations of his hypnotic skills.[184] (See Scientology and hypnosis). Licensed psychotherapists alleged that auditing sessions amount to mental health treatment without a license. The Church disputes these statements and said that its practice leads to spiritual relief. According to the Church, the psychotherapist treats mental health and the Church treats the spiritual being. Using the synonym of alternative religions, Barrett (1998:237) and Hunt (2003:195) place Scientology in the sociological grouping of personal development movements together with the Neurolinguistic Programming, Emin, and Insight.

i am reading the unofficial biography of l ron hubbard by russell miller at the moment and it is quite hilarious. Frightening. but hilarious.
the man is one of the all time biggest spoofers ever according to the book. Scientology is derived from his original attempt at a cult - dianetics. It involves using hypnosis to regress to early memories to find engrams which cause distress later in life. scientology went one farther pushing people into past lives which took place all over the universe. One quote which was especially funny was during the time when he formed the sea org- the scientology expedition undertaken by hubbard after he was kicked out of australia britian and rhodesia. He and his cohorts formed a navy and sailed around the med and the baleaerics in three or four large vessels. After a bad hurricane level storm wrecked one of the ships and it crawled to port hubbard made a fellow scientologist captain of the vessel but she had no prior seamanship experience. When she protested he pushed her toward a past life experience and continually pressed her until she found herself as a captain of a space ship in some past life.
that was experience enough for hubbard and he let her take over the ship
one word, actually two.
fucking. nutjobs.
