Yeah, it definitely doesn't just apply to whackjob cults like the Branch Dravidians or the kool-aid people. Those are just extreme cases - all religions encourage blindly following the leaders.

Dunno about up there in Indiana (I might go to grad school up there), but down here in Mississippi, religions advertise all the time.

Really? Like Southern Baptists and prominent churches like that buy advertising time on television? What do they advertise?

It's the first commercial I've ever seen. But we also have like 3 channels devoted entirely to Christian churches, so maybe that isn't common.

IU, PU, BSU, IUPUI, Valpo. N.D.?
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

I dunno about infomercials, but they advertise their churches in regular ads, and there are tons of billboards for churches, and they also advertise for stuff like the abstinence campaign, or the abortion campaign, or Jesus Saves sort of stuff in general.

IU. It's probably my top pick at the moment (for music theory).

Btw, I didn't mean infomercials, I meant like regular 30 second ad you'd see for a movie or a food product. Wow. I mean we have billboards, and I'm sure they probably have a page in the yellow pages or what not, but I'm amazed that they do it on t.v. Regular cable? I think I was watching Comedy Central when I saw the Dianetics one.

IU: Have you visited Bloomington yet?

Nope, never been to Indiana. I've heard there's not much to Bloomington, but I have a friend that taught there for many years (he's emeritus now) and he says it's a great place to live. I've researched their campus a lot, but not the town. :D

Anyways, the commercial told me to go to dianetics.org. But I'm afraid to, I cave quickly to peer pressure and I don't think that would bode well around a cult mentality.

I've been there quite a few times, some of my best friends went there for undergrad. It got as crazy as Scientology seems to be with its whacky tenets. (My pathetic attempt to keep this on-topic.)

I did not meet any scientologists there. I actually don't know if I've ever met one, come to think of it.

I think they try to refrain from being real open about it (except for the ones who have gone batshit crazy like Cruise). Other religions look at them and laugh. I'm sure they don't want to open themselves up to public mockery.

I imagine it's from sheer spite and envy (Malazan references). But, I could be wrong here.

I agree. I thought we were spirits of the aliens fleeing the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
