I got off work super early yesterday (damn thunderstorm), and on the way back, strolled by a Coles. which had a "buy 3, get 4th free" event going on.

grabbed "Neuromancer" and "pattern recognition" by Gibson, Paul Kearney's "Corvus" (sequel to the Ten Thousand), and John Scalzi's "the Last Colony"

really, only excited about the last one. I need to start avoiding bookshops, by TR pile is huge, and school's about to start again....

I was excited to see the 3 for 2 in Waterstones, thought it'd be perfect for getting the next couple of Dresden books and something else but the books I wanted but they only had Fool Moon and Ghost Story, I though well okay they have Codex Alera stuff I shall get the first couple of them and they started at book 4. Everything else I needed to buy wasn't in there so I gave up on fantasy and decided i'd just get what I wanted off amazon instead.

Ended up getting a cracking translation and lovely looking book of The Odyssey and Don Quixote as well, translation looks decent for that as well. I was going to get War and Peace but that was all scratched and there was only one there so I just got another Dickens instead, although I wanted Tale of Two cities but it wasn't the version that was in the offer so kind of mixed success.

STAR WARS: HEIR TO THE EMPIRE (20th Anniversary Edition) - Timothy Zahn

Probably the most well-respected trilogy in the entire Star Wars Expanded Universe, and I've never read it....hell I even OWNED all 3 books in paperback and just never got to read them, and instead at some point started on the New Jedi Order series and didn't look back.

Seemed like a perfect time to buy the first book in that series with this swanky, brushed metal-looking hardcover ANNOTATED version.

Looking fwd to this one.

I think you'll enjoy it.
The only problem with this series is that it shines a harsh light on the vast majority of the rest of the SWEU stuff.

I had a nice haul today:
Amazon fairy brought the Midnight Mayor and I ordered Leviathan Wakes and Appleseed, and at the discount book store I bought: The Lions of Al'Rassan, Monarchies of God 1 and 2, Shriek: an Afterword, Culture: 1,2, and 3, Isle of the Dead/Eye of the Cat (all for under $20 - except the amazon stuff).

I'm considering ordering Shadows of the Apt book 1 but I'm unsure about it. I tried to search it on this forum but every word but "shadows" is under 4 characters.
(Nevermind. Found them and I think the general consensus was that the idea's great, the world building is great, but apparently he's just not a good writer)

he does characters very poorly. cringe-worthy poorly. writes some mean battles, though

oh,and the books get better. Book 3 is solid.

I just ordered Thunderer and Gears of the City by Felix Gilman. I have no idea if they're any good or not but the amazon reviews seemed pretty good. And I always trust amazon reviews. Actually, the bit I read on them seemed intriguing; kind of a new weird, urban, steampunk fantasy type o' thing. I found these while checking out whether to buy the Half Made World by Gilman. Since these were $5 apiece and Half made was $13 I opted for these.

It's my birthday this week and I'm going ape-shit buying books (15 in 3 days). When I'll actually find the time to read them is another matter.

So I'll have to see how this turns out but after years of passing by, picking up and putting back, I have finally purchased a copy of Robert Jordan's The Eye of the World for my Nook, so I've embarked on reading WoT for the first time. And if I keep at it and read the whole thing through it should be finished by the time I get caught up, if I make it that far. I've heard that the first several books are great then the quality takes a down turn and towards the end he picked up on the quality again, so I'll see and hopefully form my own opinion then be swayed by others' opinions.

I've got The Lords of the North, by Bernard Cornwell. Having just read the first two two in the series (The Last Kingdom and The Pale Horseman) I thought I'd carry on with it - pretty good so far. Although, having read all his other stuff, there are a lot of character types that are very familiar.

Good though overall, the series (although unrelated) carries on chronologically, but not directly, from his Arthurian 'Warlord' trilogy, if you liked that.

That is accurate. For most people the 1st 5books are top notch with a slow decline into utter shit till his last book before his death(11)....

To be fair, most of the vocal haters waited two years or so between books 6-10 and were rewarded with mediocre (at best) books where very little happened, or else one major event maybe happened with an awful lot of characters shuffling from point A to B.

Read back to back, the books may not suffer quite as much. You'll still see a difference in quality, but it won't be as frustrating as it was for those of us who devoured the first 5 and then suffered for a decade or so, and then RJ gets his act together for his last book and Sanderson raises the bar back to where it should have been.

I bought Crack'd Pot Trail as well, but I went with the hard copy instead of the eBook, since I have all of the others in hard copy too.

As for WoT, it's actually the second fantasy series that I ever read (Lord of the Rings being the first) and I really adored it when I first started it. Mind you, I was sixteen at the time and I think book six had just been released...anyway, I am one of those who believes that the quality definitely dipped around book 7 or so, but it did improve quite a lot after the ninth and I am eager to see what happens in the final book.

I plan on getting a physical copy of Crack'd Pot Trail as well Erikson is definitely one of the authors that I'm going to collect physical copies of.
