holiday shopping, round one:
picked up both volumes of Paul Kearney's "Monarchies of God" series. Endorsed by SE himself? yes, please!
also, grabbed volume 5 of Tchaikovsky's "Shadow of the Apt". will see how that goes.

My December acquisitions, bought with Christmas money and late birthday money, as well as one gift (the Sherlock Holmes):

*insert thumbs way up for both OLD MAN'S WAR and THE GHOST BRIGADES*

Some great choices there!

I just ordered Joe Acercrombie's The FIrst Law Trilogy earlier today. Man I just checked as I have Ilium sitting on my book shelf and I had completely forgotten about it so I'll put that in the queue.

Quick: I am definitely excited to read the Scalzi books! They'll probably be the first thing I tackle after Stonewielder.

BK: I loved Ilium, but Olympos really squandered a lot of that potential. (It was still worth reading, though.)

Love the Deryni series, it doesn't get enough mentions around here. (By first, I assume you mean first by publication order rather than by internal chronology. The first trilogy is the one everyone should start with, Deryni Rising, Deryni Checkmate, High Deryni.)

The only flat note in that pic above is Non-Stop by Aldiss, for me -- just didn't work, hasn't aged well.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

I read the Deryni trilogy first, then the Camber trilogy (Camber of Culdi, Saint Camber, Camber the Heretic), and the Histories trilogy (The Bishop's Heir, The King's Justice, The Quest for Saint Camber). IMO that's the best order, but you can read the Histories trilogy before reading the Camber trilogy.

There are follow-up trilogies too, filling in some gaps in the internal chronology: the Heirs of Saint Camber trilogy (The Harrowing of Gwynnedd, King Javan's Year, The Bastard Prince) and the Childe Morgan trilogy (incomplete currently). I've only read the first, and I haven't got much patience for prequels and whatever you'd call intra-sequence novels (intraquels?) By order of internal chronology you'd read them like this:

Camber trilogy -> Heirs of Camber trilogy -> Childe Morgan trilogy -> Deryni trilogy ->Histories trilogy -> standalone novel King Kelson's Bride.

Kurtz herself recommends reading in publication order, which would be: Chronicles (Deryni) trilogy -> Camber trilogy -> Histories -> Heirs -> King Kelson's Bride -> Childe Morgan.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

Bought The Heroes and Way of Kings off Amazon with gift voucher funds. I knew they were good for something.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Well being impatient as I am and a general horder of books I went ahead and just ordered Stonewielder from Amazon.uk moments ago because I want to read it before The Crippled God comes out. This after just receiving my copies of Joe Abercrombie's The First Law trilogy today.

I have the severe problem of continously ordering/buying books and the backlog just piles up and up and my bookshelves are starting to stage a revolt. I'm reading Persian Fire currently and plan to read Ilium next and then probably the Abercrombie trilogy after that. But I have the Mistborn trilogy and The Way of the Kings sitting on my shelf staring at me plus the 2nd and 3rd books of the Fate of the Jedi series, and The Tales of Bauchelain and Korbach Broach plus numerous others I've bought but have yet to get to.

I generally re-read LoTR every year or so and I've been meaning to re-read the original Dune series and after coming to this site it's very obvious(reading through very intelligent and insightful threads/posts here) that I need to re-read the Malazan series but there aren't enough hours outside of work and life to get to it all.

I totally did this in November of last year for the same reasons...and was worth it. I also (after prodding by Abyss) pre-ordered The Crippled God from Amazon.co.uk...the little extra in shipping was worth not having the hassle of having to wait for Canadian booksellers to get their heads out of their asses ans stock the things. So order TCG from them too is my advice.

Man that's too funny- just yesterday I was telling myself I need to stop buying so many books and I just read your post and instantly ordered it. Thanks very much for the great idea- now I'm more excited that I get to read TCG even earlier. Much thanks!

And now i complicate your lives because Flea just drew my attention to the fact that amazon.ca now has TCG a whole THREE WEEKS ahead of .uk!!!!!

Being greedy and compulsive, i pre-ordered it there too!

in buying news, just picked up Kadrey's SANDMAN SLIM, because Kadrey is awesome and Kadrey doing urban fantasy can only be more awesome, and Stross's MERCHANT PRINCES bk 1 based on the fact i totally enjoy Stross and recommendations over in the Laundry thread.

Amazon.ca are notorious at messing with release dates and you won't find out till they don't send it in time. Canadian Amazon=usually epic fail. That said, if you get it three weeks early I'll have to eat my hat...

...luckily my hat is made of chocolate and gummi bears. :p

I paid a visit to my new local Chapters today, taking advantage of my gift card.

I bought "Turncoat", because I haven't had Dresdencrack for a while now.
"The line of Polity", Cormac number 2--because this store actually had a very decent Asher selection.
and, as per Wert's review, "the Cardinal's Blades".

looking forward to all of these.

Eerily, I too have just got my hands on this one and started reading - began this morning, nearly done already. Brilliant book, Fforde's hit gold again.
