The Final Empire - Sanderson
Shadow and Betrayal - Abraham

Finally decided to give them a try. You can only read so many reviews before realising you just gotta have a look.

Funny, I bought these two together last year and I don't often buy more than one book at a time. Both are very good, but in different ways.

Stopped by Half Price Books to look for a book for my wife, and instead found (for myself) Necronomicon: The Best Weird Tales of H. P. Lovecraft. A huge, faux-leather bound trade paperback for $9. Couldn't pass it up.

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

A friend of my dad's just sent over the first 3 Dresden Files novels, for nothing at all! Someone up there likes me.

Pure win. But backhanded, because once you're through those, you're going to buy the next six.

- Abyss, notes that's a good thing.

I had it worse; my father-in-law gave me the second book. So I had no choice but to track down the first. Then after I read those two...

Got some Masterworks books, to try a new author, rediscover an old favourite, and retry an author I bounced off first time. Respectively, they were:

M. John Harrison: _Light_
Cordwainer Smith: _The Rediscovery of Man_
Gene Wolfe: _The Fifth Head of Cerberus_

It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

Went into the city this Friday and visited my favourite book store. Spent a good chunk of cash.

Changes - Jim Butcher: Book 12 in the Dresden Files. I'm a HUGE Dresden fan and this came out a month ago, but it was sold out when I went into the city. Finally got my hands on it.

Furies of Calderon - Jim Butcher: Being a big fan I'd promised myself to also check out his Codex Alera stuff. Now we'll see if it lives up to my expectations.

Kraken - China Mieville: Wertheads review sounded good and it's been a while since I read anything from Mieville.

Altered Carbon - Richard Morgan: I don't read a lot of Sci-fi any longer. This book keeps popping up on lists of good sci-fi reads, so I picked it up.

The Jennifer Morgue and The Atrocity Archives - Charles Stross: Abyss thread about some crazy urban fantasy'ish mix of secret agent stories and edrith horrors made these two a must buy. When I mentioned them to the comic book guy in the store he practically shrieked in joy talking about them.

Got a 50% e-coupon for the Science Fiction Book Club yesterday, so I completed my four-book membership commitment on the cheap, picking up:

- Brent Weeks' Night Angel trilogy omnibus
- Naomi Novik's Temeraire trilogy omnibus
- Edgar Rice Burroughs' first 3 John Carter books, in the Under the Moons of Mars omnibus
- and The Conquering Sword of Conan

all for a little over $30.

I told myself I'll just have a stroll around the flea market today.. and went home with:

Q by Luther Blissett
Diamond Dogs, Turquoise Days by Alastair Reynolds

Oh, and I got Spectrum 16, but that was a present, so doesn't count as 'bought' :)

@ Errant, let me know what you think of Tigana, I absolutely hated it, but seem to be in the minority on that opinion here

I'm only 50 pages in at the moment (busy weekend) but I like the writing style a lot so far. That's about all I can comment on until I get further into it.

What did you hate about it? I think the biggest complaint I saw on the Amazon reviews was that it was just 'boring' and 'dull,' but I've learned to take those comments with a grain of salt.

Sorry for the very delayed reply, been away from the forums for a while. I finished Tigana while I was on vacation in Italy last month (pretty fitting, huh).

I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I believe my favorite aspect of it was actually Kay's writing style. I think that if I didn't like the characters or the plot (I did), the book is so well-written that I wouldn't have even realised it until I was done reading. This has definitely gotten me wanting to read some more of his work. Any suggestions on which to pick up next?

Holy crap. Okay, last week I said I had ordered the SFBC-exclusive omnibus of Brent Weeks' Night Angel Trilogy, right? Well, I just opened it tonight. I cannot believe how massive this book is. It's a book club edition, so it's smaller than a standard hardcover, and it's almost 1400 pages long! With a spine two and a half inches thick! Unbelievable. The other 3 books I ordered with it are about the same width combined.
