I gave up on it after 100pp. Definitely a waste of money.

On the other hand, Santa gave me the first 5 volumes of the Dresden files. I'm on the third an enjoying them very much!

Interesting. Its nowhere near as unanimous as the praise for Abercombie & Lynch, but Ruckley gets a lot of praise across various boards. Rather more than Rothfuss, for example.

I may try and wrangle a review copy of the second novel and read them both together.

I picked up Devices and Desires, Book one of the Engineer Trilogy by K.J. Parker....haven't started it yet....

Winterbirth was decent....but didn't have anything new or shocking...pretty standard fantasy filler read...at least so far

I just picked up Mythago Wood by Holdstock. I kept hearing how spechul it is, so I decided to give it a go. 50 pages in and I'm not too impressed. Meh, maybe it'll get better.

I just love it when Waterstones does 3 for 2 offers

Picked up Dan Simmons' The Terror, Charlie Stross' Halting State, and a rather interesting book called Debatable Space, by Philip Palmer, which is a debut novel, I believe.

Bought and read Halting State by Charles Stross over the weekend. Like most (almost all, actually) of his books, it's exceedingly annoying until he gets over his own cleverness enough to bother cluing the reader in as to what the hell the point of the book is; at which point it becomes a hoot.
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. I recieved Robert Jordans The Great Hunt today from amazon. Ordered the first four in the Wheel of Times series for a dollar each.

I thought it was about time I looked into this series.

Must admit that I've never got around to reading a Stross book, though I've got Singularity Sky on the shelf. Still, the premise of this one looked quite fun

I'm reading it currently, and am really getting bogged down in book 9. I can barely make myself care enough to keep reading, but dammit, I'm finishing this series. It starts out decent, although cliched, but fades down the stretch. I'd say no doubt worth a dollar a book though, just to say you've read it. It's so popular, it seems like something anyone who considers themselves well read in fantasy should have read it.

To get on thread topic, I took a break from book 9 though to pick up and start Feast for Crows yesterday. Sweet bliss. This guy is good.

You know a lot of people were kinda disappointed with that book.

I wasn't one. I must very much agree that he hasn't dropped the bar yet like Jordan did.

I enjoyed it as well.

Maybe it had something to do with the fact that we had to wait so long...and now are waiting again for ADoD?

Oh, another two or three years;)

Chalk me up as dissapointed by aFfC. Bad selection of PoVs more than anything else though, Cersei just gets too much after having about half the damn book to herself.

I'm with Brood on this one. Cersei's idiocy could have been portrayed in halfed the space devoted to her. Liked the Ironmen parts but 3 PoVs was a bit much... Dorne was also ok.

On a relatednote, will venture out book-buying, probably today (only have 1 unread book left, even if it is huge). Gotta pik up books 2+3 of greg keyes' Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone, as well as more Harry Dresden....

EDIT: got book 2 of the Dresden files. Unfortunately, local indigo has no Keyes, as consolation got 2 books by Kay (Tigana + A song for Arbonne)

Hey Kud I really enjoyed the Keyes' series...I'm eagerly awaiting the fourth book.

I can see why you guys got annoyed with the latest book of GRRM. I really enjoyed the Dorne parts.

I viewed it as a great "set-up" book for book 5...which I think is going to romp ass.

Aye, but I think even in a series, each book has to be a decent stand-alone too, which is where Erikson and people like Jim Butcher are so good :)

@ Xander: good job, now I'm aware that the story won't end in a trilogy! I hope you're happy, lol...

The thing that annoyed me most about AFFC was that I finished it in one day... and I've been waiting fot the next one for > 2 years now... and when ADwD does come out, it'll be the same thing over again....

He takes too long because he is involved in so many projects. (martin)

That and he comes off a bit pompous sometimes...but I guess that might be the hate I have flowing through me for waiting so long for ADwD...yet if it is a great book I will forgive him.

@Kud...sorry man....*walks away in shame*
