Got my 40th Anniversary edition of Shardik in the mail yesterday, woot! This picture is actually missing one of my editions: it has a white dust jacket like the one here, but the hardcover underneath is different:

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

All GGK are stand alone right? I should really get one one day. When I do I ll do Tigana just cause of the love/hate rep.

FIONAVAR TAPESTRY is a trilo, SARANTINE is two books, so is UNDER HEAVEN. The rest are standalone.
And tho I enjoy slamming it, TIGANA really is one to make up your own mind about. Tho if you like it you're an easily entertained pervert.

Everything? I mean, Adams's prose is right up there; it's gorgeous. The imagery is phenomenal; it's one of those rare books that I can just close my eyes and picture everything like I was actually standing right there. The arc of the story is just epic; you start out with a hunter finding a giant bear, but where Adams takes you from there is always unexpected. The characters are some of my favorites: the protagonist Kelderek goes through a fascinating journey (since the book is about him as much as it is about Shardik); Bel-ka-Trazet is simultaneously a terrifying antagonist, but also figure of pity and deserving of respect. (I could go on about half a dozen others.) The book itself has a lot to say about religion, and humanity's search for (and abuse of) the divine. Or rather, it poses a lot of questions; what Adams never does is tell you how you should answer them. It's a thoughtful book, and the pace sometimes puts people off (the entire first chapter describes a forest fire) but I luxuriate in that stuff, and it's not like it lacks for memorable action scenes, either. It's got hints of horror, romance, great worldbuilding... I honestly can't think of one bad thing to say about it.

It's full of sex I take it?

It's not, though. There's an incestuous relationship that's brought up once, maybe twice.

Disagree. It's more like a major plot point in a fairly pointless plot, the incest element of which does utterly nothing for the story. As with many parts of the book, there's just no reason for it to be there. Unlike SIF/GoT.

Commie.

While I was picking up Bands of Mourning , I saw that Alex Marshall's "A Blade of Black Steel" finally hit trade paperback. SO I grabbed that too.

I was super-disappointed that I couldn't locate the one copy of "Magic Bleeds" that Chapters said it had in stock.
Then I got home and saw that I already bought it earlier, :p

went into chapters to look for a mmpb of "Wheel of Osheim. Turns out it's not out until Feb 28th.

Whilst browsing, I picked up Ecko Rising a debut by Danie Ware. The blurb sounded interesting: a cyberpunky assassin gets tossed into a low-tech world. Sounds like a kind of genre-mashing I generally like.

I bought two sets of books yesterday. One set is in dead tree format and the other is in earbook.

In dead tree I got Gaiman's Norse Mythology and Danielewsi's The Familiar vol 4: Hades.

I got a larger earbook haul after I realized I haven't used credits in awhile. This includes Butcher's Cold Days and Skin Game, Ilona Andrews' Magic Rises, Erikson's Midnight Tides, M. R. Carey's The Girl with All the Gifts, and Clavell's Shogun. Dresden and Malazan for rereads, but everything else will be new for me.

I forgot to mention: on Friday I went to pick up a copy of Empire Ascendant, second volume of Kameron Hurley's " worldbreakers" series.

Based on all the forum pimping, I also grabbed The Iron Ship .

Happens to me ALL the time...and the added amazon trick of "Oh, you're getting this one book? Well if you add another *insert cost of one or two more books* to your order, you get free shipping!"

ugh....I can never order just one thing from Amazon.
