That's a complaint? The relationships are very much in the background imo, only winter and Jane's is brought to the front as it's integral to the plot really. On the sex front, it's not really an issue, there is very little of it imo, certainly nothing like what Morgan and others throw at you.

It was used in the way of complaint in a few reviews I read. I take reviews with a big grain of salt, but since too much emo stuff is an issue for me, I wanted to make sure it is balanced with other things like plot, action, and such. Maybe those reviews were by boys who don't want girl cooties in their fiction at all. :p

Nah I don't think it'll be an issue for you at all, like I said any relationships that are given screen time are part of the plot and the emo/love side of it is dealt with reasonably deftly and doesnt take up much page time.

Loaned out Gardens of the Moon and Deadhouse Gates to a friend a few months ago. Wanted to start a re-read so I bought a fresh copy of GotM last week. Finished that and so now I have gone and bought a new DG. Also picked up Donaldson's King's Justice book with two novellas. I wasn't happy with Donaldson's last Covenant series, but picked up the novellas on the strength of a forum member's recommendation. We'll see.

Found a copy of what appears to be the first edition Bantam GotM MMPB in almost perfect condition for $3.50 today...!
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
―Gene Wolfe, The Citadel of the Autarch

Picked up the first Otherland book at the library for a buck. My reading time is extreeeeemely limited, haven't even made it to FoL or DL yet!

Is the series worth starting?

It's an awesome trilogy.
....in four books.

...to put in less facetious terms, the Malazan goodness you're denying yourself are better. That said, OTHERLAND is an amazing series that unfortunately is a book longer than it should be. Worth reading, but with that qualifier.

I wish Brent Weeks would make up his mind how long this series is going to be. It's gone from trilo to quad now to tetralogy. I'll read it eventually, but likely to wait til he's done. Maybe.

I'm going to back up Crabby BK here. You should get started on these sooner rather than later. They're not groundbreaking by any means, but I'd put the fun level of the series on par with the likes of Ketty Jay, Alera, and Mistborn.

So it's good fun, decent fun, and average-to-dull?

Got to talk to the right audience here PG. I wouldn't put it that way to you, but I remember Abyss enjoying all three of these pretty well, so I feel it's a fair comparison for the Damn Cat.

I wouldn't say it's as good as Mistborn, but it's better than Alera.

Whereas I rank Alera over Mistborn. To each their own.

Edit: With a bit more thought, it has a ton of similarities with Mistborn. They both feature mysterious powerful male characters helping usher in the new generation, an annoying as hell juvenile romance plot, and interesting unique magic systems. I do feel that the world building and politics are better handled in Lightbringer though.

Had to redeem a $10 off card by the end of the week, so...

Magic Bleeds by Ilona Andrews - the 4th Kate Daniels book

Hexed by Kevin Hearne - the 2nd "iron Druid" book (this was the freebie, basically)

And, because I keep hearing so much forum buzz about it...

The Red Knight by Miles Cameron - "Traitor Son", bk 1. If I'm dissapointed, i'm blaming PG for it.

Die bitch! DIE!!!!!!

Alera!

Fucking A!

I put ALERA above MISTBORN too actually. If we were just lining up first novels MISTBORN starts stronger, but as a complete story I'd say ALERA is better told, has better characters and a more interesting world.

Do bear in mind that I had to give it two goes before I got into the first book, but now absolutely love it. So it may require a teeny bit of patience at the start.

Picked up the last Powder Mage book, "The Autumn Republic" on the weekend. Gonna slot it somewhere early in the new year as commute read once I'm done the Colonel Pyat Quartet.

I'm 150 pages into book 1 and loving it, so far.

I haven't bought these, but I stupidly made an Amazon wish list of series I haven't started and sent it to my wife...

The Thousand Names by Django Wexler
The Emperor's Blades by Brian Stavely
Traitor's Blade by Sebastian de Castell
The Inheritance Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin
The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu
The Curse of the Mistwraith by Janny Wurts
Consider Phlebas by Iain Banks
Shadow and Claw by Gene Wolfe
Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bankcroft
Pandora's Star by Peter Hamilton
The Godless by Ben Peek
Colours in Steel by K.J. Parker

Hopefully my wife just gets me 1, and doesn't send the list to any family members. My TRP will hate me.
