You know, I just finished the first Merrimack duology, and I honestly wasn't that impressed. I enjoyed the action. The action was great. But the characters were... well, the antagonists were terrible. Caricatures. Idiotic and unbelievably irrational stereotypes. That the author added some flavour to explain that away doesn't change what they were.

I also did not enjoy the whole American hoo-rah military exceptionalism at display.

In my opinion this series is inferior to Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet series in every way, from the purely military aspects to the use of antagonists with, from the reader's view, irrational beliefs.

Just.bought The Fell Sword by Miles Cameron, second of the traitor son books, the first book (the red knight) was enjoyable so looking forward to this.
Also bought The Black Guard, forget authors name, blurb read kind of ok but I'm aiming to branch out and try more.new authors this year and cut down on my rereads, and this method got me the red knight, and to a lesser extent Malice, if its en par with Malice I'll be.... Well I'll be satisfied that it wasn't a waste of my money I guess.

Macros, i've read all of the above, and (for me) Malice is the worst of the bunch.

I'd rate Red Knight best, Fell Sword close.

Bit of a gap.

Black Guard.

Bigger Gap.

Malice.

Just my 0.02
meh. Link was dead :(

Ok, I rated Malice as a poor attempt to capture what was great about the start of asoaif, but readable, so I guess I'll be happy with Black Guard. Cheers coco

I'm not finished the first whole duology yet, but yeah...these are my thoughts so far as well.

I'd try it.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? And do I see powdered sugar on that too? That's Texas State Fair worthy!
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Got a copy of The Fires of Heaven to reference when I start listening to the audiobook. I've found it's easier for me to listen to TWoT than it is to read it.

I also picked up Guards! Guards!, and I'm super excited about this one. It seems to me that anyone that I ask about Discworld has very fond memories of this one.

Oh god yes Guards Guards is if not my favourite discworld then bloody damn close.
so consistently funny its unreal.
now you've got me hankering for a bit of sir Terry, I'll have to see what's on the reader.

Just finished up The Fell Sword (book two in the traitors son)
I can see why coco put it slightly below The Red Knight, but I put it on par, I think I was more used to the pov changes in this one and enjoyed the broadening of the story. Characters further fleshed out, a few more villans in the mix and a few distinctly grey areas in between. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Just about to start The World Enough, And Time by James Khan, a WEE from stormcat, small novel, considerably smaller than my normal lift but the blurb makes me want to read it so....

If we ignore the 4-5 books that's due to arrive Wednesday I'm all in for not buying anything until Skin Game. Honestly don't have the time to read that much until end of may.

I meant betting on BK's utter and expected willpower fail. Why should the rest of us suffer?
