Very much yes. GotM was no problem for me, but I admit to being lost for a good chunk of the first BC book.

The voice takes getting used to, largely because Croaker doesn't particularly give a eff if you want to know what this particular mountain looks like, or what happened during those months of traveling through treacherous lands, or even what makes most of these people tick on an individual basis. Once you're used to that, it's one of the funniest, most pleasurable reads in all of fantasy lit. The one major thing you won't get, at least initially, from Black Company that you get from MBOTF is that feeling of constantly putting together a vast puzzle. But eventually even that stuff comes along.

That's one thing i really loved in the books.


Don't worry if the first book feels a bit rambling at times... by the time you'll finish the omnibus, you'll be hooked.
And in case you're worried about it, YES he stops describing card games after the first book.

Cook's ability to do "voice" in particular is fantastic; you can definitely tell when he switches chroniclers throughout the series.

By the way i just received the leatherbound necronomicon from gollancz and oh my it's pure awesomeness.
Put it beside a signed copy of the way of kings i got last week(gift from my girlfriend), which is another beautiful tome. (sanderson's sign&ship service is quite possibly the best initiative from a writer EVER).

I made my first purchase over at Book Depository; I picked up Gemmell's Lion of Macedon and Dark Prince. Also The Dragon Factory and The King of Plagues, books 2 and 3 of Jonathan Maberry's Joe Ledger series. I LOVED the first one, Patient Zero, so I'm curious to see if the rest can keep up.

Finally, I got Dauntless and Fearless, books 1 and 2 in the Lost Fleet-series and Germline by T.C. McCarthy. Now to wait for delivery...

finally got my copy of ALTERED CARBON - Richard Morgan, now i could start my read of his Takeshi Kovacs and then continue with his A Land Fit for Heroes, and then to purchase his other 2 books, Market Forces and Black Man/Thirteen, and to read this back-to-back with Stover and Abercrombie, what a nice 3-punch combo, haha,

Fugitive Prince - Janny Wurts, i know its book 4 or something of her Wars of Light and Shadow, but it is also book 1 of her Alliance of Light something,

and last but certainly the least,

Shards of a Broken Crown - Raymond E Feist, read somewhere, can't remember who, i think it's either Macros or MTS who said he likes to think this book didn't exist, maybe I'm a glutton for punishment but when the time comes that i could finally read this, I may also think like that, just want completion and ending to the Serpentwar saga.

The Baker's Boy starts a trilogy that is pretty much fantasy by the books. I don't have a super negative opinion of it, but I'm surprised to hear it's in even a top 25 list.

Yah I'm not huge on lists either, but you said it was a site's list and not an individual's, so in terms of consensus I would be surprised that a large group would include it. Anything can be one person's personal preference, of course, I agree.

I love that website. They actually have some great recommendations. They turned me on to Malazan and ton of other great books.

Just a caution - MARKET FORCES stands separate from his other books, has no connection of significance and is a radically lower level of quality... it was his first screenplay, never picked up for anything and when AC was pub's to mass acclaim, MF was converted to a book and released to capitalize on the rush. It's decent, but nowhere near his other work imnsho.


Rothfuss' NAME OF THE WIND didn't wow me (liked the older Kvothe bits, quickly/utterly bored with Harry Kvotther, and then there's the dragon-cow...), but i spotted WISE MAN'S FEAR for $3 at a 2ndHS so i picked it up. Will read it eventually.

Unfortunately, that's a publisher's marketing gimmick. It's one large (humongous) series, split into mini-series. Each internal miniseries starts numbering the books at 1, but you need to read them from the beginning to make any sense of them. Alliance of Light is the 3rd arc of the 5 arcs.

"Curse of mistwraith" alone is Arc 1. Read that to see if you like Wurts' style.

books 2+3 are Arc 2, and then book 4 starts Arc 3, and so forth.

I think I have the first 4 at home. I read the first 2 a few years back now, I think. There are some neat concepts there, but Wurts' writing style isn't exactly my thing. It requires a serious time investment to get into, and i'm waiting till a tropical vacation where I can just chill on the beach with a book all day to get into that one. Couldn't keep up with it as a casual read.

Retribution Falls by Chris Wooding - It seems like this series has been mentioned here before.

The Waters Rising by Sheri S. Tepper - I haven't read the first one yet, but supposedly this works as a standalone, and I can pick up Plague of Angels anytime.

Frail by Joan Frances Turner - A YA zombie novel, sequel to Dust, which I'm currently reading.

Handling the Undead by John Ajvide Lindqvist - Same guy who wrote Let The Right One In. This one's about zombies, as you can tell from the title.

The Devil Delivered And Other Tales by you know who.

The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson - Still need to read Mistborn #2 first, though...
