I've just finished purchasing books 1-5 of Butcher's Codex Alera for my Sony reader. I must say I really love this e reader! Five books in one go without the hassle of worrying whether they are in stock and I they are only a fraction of the cost of the hard copies!

I'm such a collector...I need the hardcopies....but then I am a book snob.

Well I purchased the Codex books off of the Sony eBooks Store, they have over ten thousand books although there are some duplicates. You just look up the author or title, purchase the book and upload it onto your e reader. The are normally significantly less than the hard copies. They also give books away for free, last month there were ten free titles and a free magazine. This month it's a coupon for 50% off of your purchase. These are some other sites on which you can purchase ebooks

http://www.fictionwise.com/home.html
http://www.booksonboard.com/index.html
http://baen.com/library/
http://www.feedbooks.com/
http://www.gutenberg.../wiki/Main_Page

If you have the amazon kindle books are ebooks are available for it on Amazon. Some sites are cheaper than others and it depends on which formats are compatible with you reader.

Hey Tehol, I saw this promotion through Pat's Fantasy Hotlist that was talking about $1 ebooks. There is one a month and you should check it out on The Promotion Website. I'd recommend this month's book which is Brent Weeks, The Way of Shadows. Also Iain M. Banks book next month is some very good sci-fi.

Right now I am reading Polity Agent by Neil Asher. I am working my way through his Polity series and they are very good. I have the next book, Line War on tap.

I saw books 1 and 3 of PoN at Half Price Books today for $6 each (TPB) and seriously considered picking them up. I hesitated because that's $12 out of a $20 gift card, and missing the second volume.

Finally gave up on Barnes & Noble for copies of Erikson's The Lees of Laughter's End and ordered it direct from the publisher, NightShade Books.

I'm a collector as well I still buy the hard copies of alot of books. This is a convenient and affordable way for me to be able to read the books as quickly as possible. I pick the hard copies up at a later date to add to my collection when I see them on sale or they are available at the bookstore and I happen to have extra money. Trust me there's no shortage of books in my house, they take up about 2 out of 3 bedrooms and part of my computer room!

I got given The Black Company: Books of the North trilogy by Glen Cook recently...is it any good? I'm hoping it is; a couple of friends have recommended it. They got me into Donaldson, who was great, and Hobb, whose earlier works are quite good. Then again, they've steered me wrong before (Goodkind, Brooks, the Twilight series...*shudders at the latter*), so I'm hesitant. I've had a bad run recently, as my previous affections for Eddings and Feist have been shattered into a million tiny pieces. So I'm hoping for something fresh, original and exciting. You all love SE like me (or you wouldn't be here), so I'm gonna throw caution to the wind and trust your judgement. Thoughts?

Well I'm a recent Cook convert and I love his stuff, it is brilliant work! I've read the Books of the North and I'm now onto the Books of the South, I took a little detour in between to read the Silver Spike. I didn't know until someone on the board mentioned it (Salt-Man-Z I believe), but SE was heavily influenced by Cook. Now that I know you can definitely see the influences of Cook in SE's writing. So I would think it's safe to say if you like SE you should like Cook. That being said their writing is not the same so don't think if you've read one you should dismiss the other. Five books in so far and I have no complaints! I'm eagerly reading through this current book so I can get on to the next one! The other thing to consider is that the Books of the North were originally published in the 80's. The stuff Cook was writing was pretty ground breaking at the time. Very few people maybe even no one else was really doing this kind of fantasy. Excellent work with real staying power in my opinion.

I second Tehol LM's Womanslave's (lucky Lost Marine) opinion on Cook. I bought the books of the north a few months ago and read them in two days. His world building is not as epic as SE's but its outstanding stuff all the same.

Thanks for that. Didn't know he was an inspiration of SE...that's comforting. I'll get right into it then. Just have to finish The Lies Of Locke Lamora first (which I was also given recently).

My fortnightly book binge came round today. Thursday is latenight shopping, after all.

*Tyranny of the Night and Lord of the Silent kingdom, by Glen Cook.
*Soldier of Sidon, An Evil Guest, Pirate Freedom, and The Book of the New Sun (Since my old copy got water damage) - By Gene Wolfe
*Quicksilver, by Neal Stephenson
*Bloodstone, by David Gemmell

Yay!

Btw, Pirate Freedom looks completely bitching. The Cover alone inspires confidence.

Well you've got an absolutely fantastic read in Stephenson's Quicksilver! The Baroque Cycle Trilogy is the best work he's done imo. His work is always quirky and pure genius, you'll have to tell me what you think of it when you're done. :p

Do you have to read Cryptonomicon before The Baroque Cycle Trilogy, or not?

No they're completely unconnected. Well I shouldn't say completely there are one or two characters in Crytonomicon who have the same name as the main family in Baroque Cycle, but it's really unrelated. That and there is one character who pops up in both the Baroque trilogy and Cryptonomicon
Spoiler
. You could read Crytonomicon first though and never know the difference so it's not really important. Personally I would read the Baroque Cylce first and then go on to Crytonomicon, but no it's not necessary. Have I confused you enough yet? :p Sorry!

Sergei Lukyanenko - Last Watch

Is that the russian vampire hunter trilogy?

If it is are they any good - As in better than the films, Nightwatch (I think it was called)? Because while the first film was interesting, it was more weird than good.

it's not about vampire hunters--that's oversimplifying it WAY too much, :p

Edit: I should also add the English-edition back cover blurbs SUCK. if you feel put off from reading by reading those, DON'T be. [/edit]

and there are 4 books in that series:

Night Watch
Day Watch
Twilight Watch
Last Watch

they are.. different
each book is composed of 3 related stories
the movie "Night Watch" dealt with the first story of the first book.

Basically, it's urban fantasy that doesn't fit the american cliche of "guy/girl hero with powers vs. the hidden world of the paranormal"

it's hard to say more without spoilers. but it's good
Disclaimer: I read them in the original published language (Russian), so I can't vouch it'll be as good in translation.
